Well, my old console TV gave out today. Went down to the local Walmart and seen there wasnt anybody that knew much of anything about them...me included.:( So...I'm off to Best Buy in Athens in the morning. Any opinions on what's good or bad and what to stay away from?:dono

We bought ours at Best Buy several years ago. This was our first flat screen TV. We determined what size screen we needed(42") and just looked at all the 42" ones on display and picked the one that looked to us like it had the best picture. We got an LG, not the most or least expensive, did not really look at the prices to start with, but this one was as good as any we looked at. Not a minute's trouble since we got it in 2007. We got an LCD, there were some issues with Plasma back then, but I think that has been resolved so just a matter of what looks right to you.
Since you had a console you did not have High Definition so you will be blown away with the picture. If you have satellite TV(like us) you will have to change your receiver to HD and pay a little extra but well worth it. Don't know about cable and HD.

We have had great luck out of the Visio brand.
I agree it is hard to beat the Visio for price and quality.

I may wind up buying from Walmart but after looking at the diffeerent TV's I started having some questions and didnt know the answers and the Walmart girls certainly didnt know. Some of the TV's have 1 component, 1 computer, 1 composite, 3 HDMI (some more or less), some have 2D and 3D capabilities, some have built in WIFI...etc, etc.
Man! I dont know what all this stuff is so I thought I'd go to best buy and see what those guys can teach me. After that maybe I can make up my mind (I think). I do know that I've been wanting one of them big 50"-55" TV's for ALOOOOOONG time so now I hope to have one working in my house before the sun goes down tomorrow evening!Thumbs Up
I went with LG worth the extra bucks, did a lot of checking. Got mine at HH Gregg. it was interest free for 12 months on their credit card which they approved on the spot. I got mine in Anderson, and liked the people that waited on me
i bought a insignia tv at best buy last nov.(insignia tv is best buy store brand) i liked price & pic it hads.
They got the BIGGINS TOO!!!!
Butch i just purchased two HD flat screens over the memorial weekend. To start, Samsung is rated the best overall TV and you will pay additional for that quality. Most major name brands are good though. Me, I like the Sony brand. Multiple HDMI hook ups are only useful is you chose to add multiple HD devices like a Blu ray DVD player or gaming consoles. For cable or satellite hook ups with HD programming a single HDMI port will be enough. If you choose a larger TV, say one over 46" You may wish to pick a 1080 over a 720. This number represents how many pixels there are per square inch, similar to a fish finder. The higher the number the sharper the picture. Not as noticeable on smaller screens, but definitely will be seen on the larger ones. The 60 or 120 HZ number represents the refresh rate of the screen. You will notice this when watching fast paced events like sports, racing, car chases etc. The slower HZ speed will make the picture seem to lag behind a bit. The race cars will appear blurry is what I'm trying to say. Unless you wish to watch TV wearing 3D glasses don't opt for that option. A lot of the newer TVs have internet capabilities just like a lap top computer. If your house has a wireless modem or if you have one installed. You will then be able to search the web without ever leaving the confines of your la-z-boy recliner. I hope this helps you out a bit, Good luck with your search.

Well, looked at alot of TV's and looked at my wallet and decided on a 51" Samsung. Got it home and got everything programmed and the wife and I are pleased with the decision. Right now it's sitting on top of a coffee table slid into the corner (sitting a little low for a big screen TV) so I have to build a nice table for it once it cools off this fall. For now it is what it is though.:rolleyes: Thanks for all your comments.
