Has anyone from the board ever fished Lily Pond? I check of Google Earth and Bing maps, it looks like during winter drawdown it keeps a good bit of water unlike the other sloughs on the South side of Wheeler. I didn't know if that was because it was only connected to the lake during high water or if maybe it was a little deeper than other sloughs in the area. I'm thinking of makeing a trip next weekend to try it out.
Ditch, you got any GPS coordinates for Lily Pond. Not sure if I have fished it or not... at least not by that name.

Hay Grant, There were only a couple on this side of the river that I hadn't tried. I'd conducted a detailed scrub of google earth right after I move here. I'm starting to expand my area to thesSloughs south of the lake now. We need to link up to sink some cover, what does Sunday morning look like for your schedule?
Dad and I worked on some stake beds in the far east end years ago. At the time we were doing a lot of wading for crappie and had some decent luck there. All the fisihing that we did was in the spring, during spawn, in the bushes and areas that we had constructed. Not sure that is much help, but I know it holds crappie in the spring...
I'm going to try this Sat. Anyone that has a kayak, canoe or flat bottom is welcome to meet up. I've never fished anything south of the lake, but this looks like a good place for me to start. There should be shad spawning in it, if I can find some baitfish, then I'll find some Crappie!

I'm going to try and be there at 5:00AM, but it will be plus or minus 15 or 20 minutes. I'm not sure how long it will take from Madison. I'll end up fishing until it gets to hot. Even if the fish shut down I'll spend some time getting to know the pond with my depth finder. I'd love to see a dozen people from the board all pounding the water at Lily Pond that morning. We'll see who all shows up?
Sunday looks good on my end. Being that we are doing something we probably shouldn't...what do you say about 4:30am give or take?
You will learn from the depth finder that the bottom is pretty much flat. It is not extremely deep, mostly about 4'-5' right now. I grew up 1/2 mile from this place and know pretty much where every rotted out stump was. The ditches have changed a little and you should find plenty of 7''-8" crappie and decent bluegill. There is a pipe that the slough drains through so it is according to how busy the beavers have been to how much water is in this slough at a given time. This body of water already gets plenty of pressure. I would remove everything from the truck and leave it unlocked so that the windows do not get broken (fairly common in the area). Cheaper to leave it unlocked and let them open the door and let them look around. Boat can be unloaded on the west end at two locations. Good Luck!!

I would say anywhere on Wheeler on the south side of the river you risk having a vehicle broken into if it is left unattended. Happened more than once for us. Not as much someone bothering you, just your vehicle.Quote:

Congress finally fixed that a couple of years ago. You can carry on Wheeler NWR. Not onto a military installation though.

I'm retired US Army (Military Police, 31B) and a veteran (Kosovo, Bosnia, Iraq x 2, Afghanistan). I'm not inclined to exchange rounds with someone unless I'm protecting my life or my families, but that's very bold to break in someone's vehicle in the woods. Most people that are in the woods are carrying! I'd think that the thief could very easly end up with a few extra holes.

I'd recommend still checking with the Wheeler Game Wardens. Most law enforcement are pro guns when it comes to the average guy. They just want them out of the crooks hands.
Who's going to be at Lily Pond in the morning? I know Predator130 said before that he's planned to be there and I talked with Z-man tonight he's coming. That's three of us.
