Fished from 9-12. Caught 29 keepers in 24 fow 10 feet deep drifting minnows. Didn't fish very long because as the old man likes to do, bought 100 minnows and when they were gone so were we. Had one about 2 pounds the rest were just keepers with a couple 10's thrown in.
Did you catch them in the A.M. or P.M.?

Hey Dutch, I don't know if this will help but what i use i will only lose a couple of dozen, if that. I have just a regular 5 gallon bucket with a Frabill lid and a quiet bubbles aerator. Been trying to find a foam insert for the bucket to make it better insulated. The lid comes from sportsmans warehouse and fits buckets 4 1/2 - 6 gallons. The quiet bubbles comes from walmart. Runs on 2-d batteries. Runs about 36-42 hours straight. But honesty, the thing that helps the most is when i get bait, Kennny will put about 3 1/2-4 gallons of water in it. I will freeze a couple of drinking water bottles and put them in the cooler of the boat. Add them to the bucket to keep the water cool. Here is the lid so you can see it. Not sure where you are located but may find something similar.Quote:

Ol man says by the time you use up 100 minnows, it is too hot for him to keep fishing.
We keep our minnows alive just by using a floating minnow bucket. Just tie it to the back of the boat and drift along getting a few out at a time to use. The ones we catch will bite them alive or dead. We don't lose very many minnows this way.
We use every minnow in the boat....live ones first....then dead ones...then the old crusty ones thrown off earlier.
We used to use a "bubbler" but when you turn it off it just seemed like it was so loud.
I agree it has been getting HOT by noon. I have been fishing from daybreak to 9:30am for Bluegills and then it's time to quit because of the Heat.Quote:

This is what I started boating once it reached 100 this morning. They fight amazing on 4lb test but they poop in the boat every single time.
I was amazed at how different the bite was today when compared with Monday morning. The fish were not on the same flat I was catching them on and were scattered. I had 4 keepers on crankbaits and it was like somebody turned off the light switch. I found 15 on some brush piles in 19-24 FOW single poling a minnow and a couple at Buffalo Gap. The Amish guys were killing them but there were a ton of shorts being caught. The thermometer on my phone read 100 degrees by 11am so I headed for the house after caching a dozen or so gar.

Or you could just buy (or let him buy) 100 minners, and you use jigs !!
Then again ... buy 10 doz (=120) since most bait shops sell/price by the dozen, anyway. OR buy them from a baitshop that doesn't COUNT EVERY SINGLE MINNER :p ... or one that sells them by weight, & get a pound !! Depending on size, you'll get between 8-12doz minners per pound ... so, at the very least you'll get close to 100 minners, and possibly over 140 (& they're usually cheaper by weight, than by dozens).

Its not so much that he buys them but that all he wants to take. And i have notice when i am setting in there, he will watch/go in with Kenny when he gets the minnows:). Even if stsburnsy told Kenny 200 and that he was paying for it, i think his dad would still say no, 100 please. He is just like my grandfather. Around Green you can only get them by dz or by hundreds, that i know of. Cheaper by the hundred. I wish you could gettem by the pound around there. Its about 200 minnows and a couple bucks cheaper.Quote:

Thats where i used to get my minners back when crazy Mike worked there. Then the quality of the minners went down. I used to put only a half a pound in a bag and alot of them still died after a while. Started using Duffs but then they closed. Now, if i need minnows in a bag for 2-3 days, i go to backwaters on New Circle Rd. They will put a half a pound in a bag and they will last 2-4 days, as long as you keep them cool. Or, if they are open, on my way down i will stop at Rocky top and gettum.Quote:

I used to go to Duff's, too. (I knew him from school) Also used to go to 7th St. Bait .... both long gone. I liked Duff's because he seperated his minners by size (sm/med/lrg).
Backwaters is OK ... Bill is a good feller. Rocky Top closes around 9PM I think ... which is why Carl & I had to buy minners at Chimney Rock Marina, on our last trip (we passed Rocky Top at around 930PM & they were closed).

He just wants to get 100 (no matter who pays) ...he just can't take the heat like he used to. When the weather is cooler if we run out by 11 we will go get more if the bite is hot. I'm just glad to still be able to take him fishing.Quote:

I'm just getting back into fishing there, moreso than in the past few decades, so I'm not all that familiar with the current places selling bait.
