Mine is tube jigs, that's as close to live as it gets for me.nonono
Didn't know there was other options for live bait. I guess maybe goldfish. My crappie like them but I am a jig man also.
Just picked up some rosey-red minnows last night. Never tried them. Old man says he only gets them at a certain time of the year which I took for as now.
Always wonder why nobody uses crawdads, cause I clean em all the time with little baby crawdads in their bellies. I use minners from time to time, but its usually a jig with a nibble for me.
crawdads are very seasonal. Most folks around rake them out of the ditches along the road. Preferred bait for sand bass. One local bait store has them for sale right now. $1.89 per dozen. Certainly not cheap.
minnows
1. on a #2 hook (with a split shot about 6" above the hook) dropped down beside a tree, stump, etc.
2. on a #2 hook (with a 1/2 oz weight about a foot above the hook) slowly trolled above those stumps when the water is high or fish are suspended
i know wax worms are great tipped on a jig in the mississippi oxbows!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i am completly done with minnows ,we have a local bait shop and covenience store close to the interstate , since they changed owners you can ask and pay for 5 dozen and get maybe 2 1/2 dozen just about every time you go in there- SO I DONT GO IN THERE EVER ANYMORE -that combined with the trouble of keeping um alive and rebaiting hooks , no thanks fishing is supposed to be fun , i use jigs and ONLY JIGS!
for crappie i like a minner on the end of my mrr crappie black tuxcedo
Jig fishermen outfish me 10 to 1 usually. Heck everyone does.
But I caught a limit today on Nimrod with minnows. I came to grips long ago with myself.......I have a lot of mental problems (:)) and watching a cork is great therapy for me. I'd rather catch 5 on minnows than 25 on jigs. Someday I'll have to change, cause minnows are hard to come by lately. I save 'em all.......but summer is impossible to keep them for long. Anyway, placing that minnow in the right spot, and WAITING for a hit, and learning to read the cork..............is my therapy. Today, every single minnow I pulled out was missing an eye or was mangled like a butcher had gone after it. And I seldom detected a bite (in the wind).....so I have lots to learn, it seems.
But I love minnows. And I'm about to get too old to change.
But I am in awe of a good jig fisherman.
Fellas, I love to fish with a jig, but he's right, there is certainly something very theraputic about watching a floater disappear under the water.
X2.
1. Minnows-- Dunked, Trawled, and Trawled with a Minner Critter!!!.
2. Wax Worms-- Single Poled with a Jig and Tube, or Trawled on a Jig. Tight Lined or under a Cork for Bream on a 1/32 Jig, No Skirt!!
3. Crickets-- Tight Lined or Under a Cork for Bream.
4. Nibbles-- they smell alive (or maybe Dead)!!! LOL
