For those of you who use artificial bait, what is your best color or color combination for catching Redear and Bluegill?
ive been catch bluegills on 1" Gulp! minnows lately, under a float bout 18 inches, smelt is the color i use, besides that, nightcrawlers
I dont know about best ,,,but ive caught some nice ones on this color.http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...Photo-0051.jpg
Solid black for gills/ears!
Solid red, black and chartreuse, in that order. I put more stock in depth and speed than I do color, though.
Right on the money, there. I like solid black, pumpkin seed, and watermelon red but bream are known to bite an empty hook at times so it doesn't seem to matter a whole lot. I prefer a faster retrieve than many and still catch a bunch. Others like to just cast and wait and catch 'em.
orange and yellows are good for em
1" orange/chart. tube jig has caught me alot of gills in open water and through the ice.
orange and brown crawfish color
Anything one inch that has black or brown that looks buggy.. tip with waxies.
Otherwise use something chartreuse. Color to attract. Waxies for scent. Slow your roll and fish slower.
Solid black, water melon/red flake. Black/orange . Several yrs. Ago i went into the bait shop and bought a large box (egg crate)of slider one inch slider grubs . He was no longer going to stock the whole line . Gave 100 dollars for the box and about 200 small spinners . Saw someone on here a short while back talking about using without a spinner , man werer they right . Used the spinners for yrs . And caught tons of bream /bass but without the spinner the slower fall is awesome .
I caught about 50 in around an hour and 30 minutes on Gulp! waxies in the natural color.
Black little plastic crickets with black jig head. Works good for me
Color....chartreuse/black in combo.....
Black or buggy color for soft plastic grubs but mostly use a wax worm.
Most of my sunnies are taken while fishing crappies, which recently has required very tiny jigs with pearl tails a color that sunnies don't especially attack.
The hottest baits I have found for sunnies directly is the one inch black GULP alive leech. That also works best on the slowest possible settle to reach the fish and IMO a hook no larger than size 8 or they will nibble around it, unless you have both very large sunnies with no dinks around and a strong bite in the first place. The GULP waxies come in a close second, tend to be stolen less and so are cheaper. The 1 inch GULP Alive minnows are a very close third place, but also get stolen or beaten up a whole lot quicker than the GULP Waxies.
I have the best results using black twister tails tubes and maribou jigs. Small in-line spinners (Mepps, Rooster Tails, and Panther Martin are my favorites) in black/gold blade, white/silver blade chartreuse with either gold or silver blade. Also try tiny-size spoons in shiny gold or silver. Another bait that has produced some big 'gills is the Rebel Teeny Wee Craw and Crickhopper. Dry flies and poppers are a blast!
Tom
are you rigging the gulp minnows on a bait hook?
1 inch black slider grub on a red 1/32 jig head .
personally for me, a small #16-6 teardrop jig tipped with either a gulp maggot or one of their new moussies a few feet under a small slip bobber has been the goto
Berkley gulp minnow on a 1/64 oz jig with the jig being in either pearl white or orange.
I also like to tip the jigs with Berkley power wigglers or Eagle Claw Crappie Trailers
I do best on, olive, watermelon, pumpkin, ect any natural green/brown. Then for really stained/muddy waters I use orange and yellows.

Last month my fishing partners and I have had very good luck with this home made chartreuse green lure. The lure is so simple I named it a KISS Bug. :-). There are two sizes a 1/32 once # 10 hook and a 1/16 once # 8 hook.
The 1/32 once is fished under a fixed balanced bobber and the 1/16 once is slowed trolled. In both cases a 1/2 piece of tempered power bait is used for scent.Attachment 100359
