I need some advice about buying a new troll motor and what Ib. size i need to look at? I like a minn kota.
You need a 24v 70lb or 80lb motor. Dealers always install under powered motors on their boats for some reason.
take a look at these 2 sites one will get you a chart for size boat to what pound thrust motor the other one is from minn kota you answer the questions and it will give you the suggested motors and pound thrust!!!!!

Yea, go with the 70#. I have a glass 17' deep V with a 70# and there's plenty of power even in some strong wind. My son has a 17' tracker with a 55 and it's OK and about the bare minimum when the wind gets up.
I have a Tracker PT175 w/ a 60 merc on the back, and have a Terrova 55# w/IP on it. Moved up from a MG 43#'r, the MK55# will pull my 175 along at 2.3 mph on 9, the MG did the same on Hi/5. The Terrova will move my boat along at a steady.3mph & on up, haven't tried <.3mph yet. Your style of fishing and weather conditions should figure into your thinking. If you fish in windy conditions, maybe you need the 70 or more, I don't fish in that kind of weather, just don't enjoy it so see no reason to do it, but that's just me.

I been lookin at the prices of the 55 and 70 and if I go with the 70/24 volt.I'll have to buy a battery also. But I would spend the extra cash for a 70 if the 55 ain't gonna do the job. I'm gonna have to do some more research and thinkin on this.
i work on boats the 24 v is the way to go on all boats it will last longer on the water all day .
stronger windy days/ rivers. speed to move around in small bays the list can go longer and longer
70lb min will work great

A little late to this dance, but I'd recommend that what ever you buy, strongly consider a variable speed. It'll save your battery and not be as jerky when tryin to slip up on the elusive little specks.

I have measured the space where my batteries go and I could put a third one in there but like TNT said his 55 did everything for him. I have a 40 lb on the boat now and I fished in the 15 MPH wind today and it did OK but I think I might go with the variable speed 55 and save a few coins. Still have to think on it. My problem is the 40 I got now on the boat is in great shape and works fine. Heak I might just go get a new one anyway. We don't go round but one time and life's to short to not get what we want :)
Go for a new PD M-K w/I-pilot, you won't regret it. The 55 does me fine in a 17.5 crestliner in all but the worst weather but you might consider the 70 if you'll be trolling into the waves, I only troll downwind with the electric. The fish don't know how to bite when the lure is coming in from behind them as they're facing into the wind.Rofl

It was on sale at BPS for 474.00 plus fish finder and a 55 dollar mail in rebate.Could not pass up the deal. Me and my Dad are going in the mornin and I'll see how it does. Thanks for all the input but I think the 70 would have been a little to much for my boat.
Good decision. I had a 70# 24v 5 speed on a 17.5' alum Tracker. I hated that thing, it was just too fast. I couldn't slow it down. Yes you can have too much TM. I switched to a 12v 55# variable speed and am much happier. The 70v would have probably worked out if it were a variable speed but the 70# was just to much for that boat. No way I could run it on high it would have tore itself off the bow.
I hope it does what you need. I'm very late in this but i will say that the variable is a good option. When it's calm i couldn't turn my last motor low enough to make small corrections, and trolling speed was too fast so you were on and off the motor constantly. I fish a brushpile that is in an open area, but it holds big fish and it's worth the trouble. My smaller motor barely held it's own and if either of us stood up, it lost ground. The 70lb keeps me in place now and I don't go home as early as I did before. The 40lb on a previous boat wasn't big enough for the wind signature of the boat and I went home early a lot of days when the fish were biting. Just my experience, hope the new one does well.
I put my new 55 on my boat and went fishin and I don't think it had much more power than my 40.So I returned it for a refund. I'm beginning to think it might be a weak battery or something. I think I'm gonna buy a new battery and if that's not the problem. I'm going with the 70.I was very disappointed with the 50.
I have MK PDV2 with iPilot on a Ranger bass boat 16'3". It does just fine. With the TM I had before, a MG 42lb about 1999 vintage, it seemed to run the battery down fast. Would have to increase the speed setting to have any performance. A weak battery will not give you the power that a good battery. Too bad you did not buy a new battery when you got the new TM.
Forgot the MK is a 55 lb.
