yamaha 115 four stroke vs 115 e tec

hello all i am new here but i am thinking about upgrading my boat motor currently a 50 yamaha four stroke after i get back from this deployment..I want speed for fishing but i will be using it alot for duck hunting so it will have to be reliable in the cold... but i cant find anything that compares the yammi to the etec except for on evinrudes website where surprise surprise the yammi lost on all test lol. but i have heard that the etec will go into some type of protection mode when it is really cold out is this true? I do not want a merc so please no suggestions on them. Also what kinda speed increase should i see from switching?

The E-Tec will run in low rpm's if it senses too hot or no oil. In cold weather you have to use XD-100 oil, no exceptions. It will start instantly in cold weather, better than what I have seen 4-strokes do. Better hole shot and better all around outboard.

The E-TEC is still a 2 stroke and a 2 stroke engine will out perform any 4 stroke out there for power, take off and horsepower to wieght ratio. That is why the test of E-TEC vs anything is always in the 2 strokes favor when it comes to high horse power outboards.

Not when it's in limp mode, even when using xd100. The 100 oil WILL NOT prevent it from ever going into limp mode. Seen it first hand. The owner, a buddy of mine, said it will get you 1 or 2 codes(limp mode events) per winter, instead of a 100. Take it for what's it's worth. No codes on a Yam 4 stroke so far, no starting issues either, at temps I've had it out in. Duck hunter here too. Temps in the teens are no problem. I'd say you were right on the hole shot statement, no question.

This question comes up every once in a while. I have no problem with this motor starting or running with other 90 hp motors, so far, barring the hole shot that is. Etec will get some gone out the hole, for sure. Top end, not gonna run off and leave me on comparable boats/loads/prop.

If you want a stronger faster motor the e-tech 2 stroke wins. If u want an outboard that will last and is dependable the yamaha wins.

Buy a Suzuki 4 Stroke. I sell all three brands, and I've sold over 400 Suzy's without a single warranty claim. More displacement, with a great hole shot, and top end. ETEC never offers a comparison test to the Suzuki. Wonder why?

so looks like the etec is out of the question i cant be on the missouri river 15-20 miles from the boat ramp and have to limp all the way back..

You have to make up your own mind and I can't offer any insight as to the E-Tec. However, I have been running a Yamaha Four Stroke since last summer and now have about 80 hours on it. I have ran it in temps at or near 100 all the way down to the teens. My boat serves dual purpose as a fishing/duck hunting boat and I'm not a fair weather hunter. It has never failed to start on the first turn of the key and it's smoother running than any of the previous three two-strokes I owned. I think the idea that the four-strokes are under powered and have less torque and/or speed is very embellished. That may have been the case in the early versions but great strides have been made over the years. I wouldn't own a two-stroke again unless someone gave it me.

I have the 2012 Yamaha 115 four stroke on a 20'CC xpress and love it so far. Some body might know what I am talking about when I get on it hard from a idle it has a slight pause before it just takes off. It is not bad but there is a little lag time but it is not long. The start up is great barely gets one turn on the crank and it fires off! and sounds good when it does. I am just not sure what that slight lag is...

how much speed are you getting out of it?

Yamaha or the Suzuki-the Suzukis are showing up in big numbers on aluminum boats around here and seem like a solid motor. I'd stay away from the Etec from a personal reason because BRP has burned me in the past and I experienced lousy customer service from them and my dealer.

I am getting mid 40s with 3 blade stainless prop not sure the pitch though. it does have a factory installed manually jack plate 6" or 8". I am not sure how I could get any faster hole shot out this thing, it has that split second lag and then it is gone. I had a 18' tracker pro team a few years ago with a mercury 90 two stroke and it was no where near this one. It is most likely the fuel injection but I have also ran a older 15 yamaha four stroke carbed and that thing would always get up a run for a 15. I want a trim gauge but not sure how to do it yet. With the 2 stroke I would always hear when I trim it up to far and then bring it back down but with this one it is hard to tell and my tack is a little low one the console to watch it all the time.

A trim gauge shouldn't be very hard to install yourself. It just consists of a little collar that goes around the tube your steering cable runs through and a spring loaded lever that attaches to the motor. The lever hits the trim cam (the collar) and indicates what position your motor is in. I've never installed one but I had one on my old boat that came from the factory. I imagine it's just three wires; hot wire, ground, and sender wire but I could be wrong maybe someone else will chime it that knows for sure.

Please explain this could make for some "good" reading. I've got friends that own Merc's and Yamaha's. The Merc's they own have had issues with gears and drive shafts. The Yamaha didn't make it past the 10 hour mark, needed new power head and that was like pulling teeth to get Yamaha to pay for everything.
