Hard to tell from the photo where it's leaking from. Can you see where it's coming from?
That small hole right below the water intake

That weep hole is where oil leaking from under a water pump on the driveshaft would possibly run out. You may need to remove the lower unit and have it resealed. While your at it change the water pump impellor. Any time I put my hands on an impellor I replace it as preventitive maintenance.
Are u sure it's not just unburnt gas/oil mix? Is it black or milky or amber? If it's black it's unburnt exhaust, amber it's lower unit oil, milky it's lower unit oil with water in it.

I had the water pump and I believe the impeller change last year.. sadly maybe 2hours on it since then .. first start up this year I changed the lower end lube .. possibly over filled it and its leaking it out when tilted? Didn't have this issue when it was stored vertically for a few weeks? Anyway to test this without breaking into the lower unit? Maybe wipe clean and store upright for a week? Thanks guys .. I'm not an engine guru CLEARLY! :)

Sure, that's exactly what I would do. Wipe it clean and leave it hanging just like you were running it. I'm not that farmilliar with your model of motor but I don't believe the weep hole is an overflow for you're lower unit oil. I know mine leaks unburnt exhaust when I trim it all the way down and I'm thinking that's all this is. You can check your leer unit oil fairly simple. There should be two plugs on the foot of your motor that require a flat head screw driver. The upper one is the way you check the lower unit oil. When you take the plug out the oil level should be right there. If it's amber your good if it's milky white there is water in it.

And to check for water intrusion I always remove the lower plug only while over a clean drain pan. Any water will be low after storage and a few drops may hit the pan, and a momentary removal of the upper plug at this time will let any water run out very fast at first and then the oil will follow at a slower rate. Color will be off also. Gear oil has it's own smell and you may be able to wipe your finger on the drainage and smell and begin answering your own questions.
You cant overfill the lower unit. Remove both screws to drain. Fill from lower hole until dope comes out top hole. Insert both screws and lower unit is full. Sounds like some unburnt oil. Does your motor have oil injection or do you premix yuor gas?
Its premixed

when you replace the prop seals whats the best gasket sealent to use? i have a leak from the bolt o rings. im getting ready to reseal all the gaskets in the lower unit.
A non drying sealer from Merc or Evinrude it's gasket sealing compound, you can use from permatex the brown tacky sealer for gaskets, just don't use silicone on any of it because it won't hold or seal and could cause oil leak and gearcase failure.
Man I'm glad I found this post. Went out yesterday to check on my fuel supply, noticed a little half dollar size pool of black liquid under the motor. I thought I had a leak. After reading this, I went back out, took the top plug out, LU oil was a different color, and diffinetly a different smell. I was idling A LOT the last time out, I think its just unburt fuel. Would have never thought that. I think I'm going to change the oil though while its on my mind. It'll be the first time for me. Keeping my fingers crossed. Its a mid 80's 35 HP Mercury. I'm assuming any marine gear oil will be OK?
I used Pennzoil .

Most likely coming from this area. Simple fix and common on evinrudes. This is a newer motor but I would bet it is coming from the shift shaft area. Pics here for you!http://img.tapatalk.com/a6898ca6-11f0-59f4.jpghttp://img.tapatalk.com/a6898ca6-11fc-c5f8.jpg

I changed the lower end lube .. dropped it off the transom saver .. still a small amount out of that hole (its not dripping just a thin line) I ran it the other day ..whatever that hole is water streams out of it on the muffs

Hays, try and find an exploded view of your motor. Even if you never turn a wrench on it it's a good thing to know what does what and where. Iboats.com has answered many questions for me, some good info there.
That's what it is....I would bet. Drop that lower unit and replace that o ring. It will work.

I would also say it's a shift or drive shaft seal. Drain the gear oil pressure test it. While under pressure place the lower unit underwater and look for bubbles..Gear oil should be milky. Just had mine done
That hole in the pic is a weep hole that is directly related to the driveshaft / water pump area, the other weep hole that is not in your pic/ on the other side of the lower unit is for the shift rod / o-ring in the pic some one else posted. I would remove the lower unit, replace the drive shaft seals under the water pump and make sure you replace the o-ring under the drive shaft bearing carrier. If it where mine the lower unit would be getting resealed, cheaper than a new lower unit.
Thanks guys .. looks like I'll be getting it worked on for sure.. I've got a few ppl to call .. I'm not taking it back to the shop I've used before so I'm calling a few private mechanics .. see what they will charge. I took some pics ..

just to update in case someone down the line has the same problem. i tilted the motor back down and it doesnt leak anymore.. odd
So what was the problem?
Unsure ..I'm going to take it out and run it and recheck

Well you know its not really leaking from those holes its really leaking from up top where the seal is located and running down. As the gear oil leaks and the shaft spins it slings a small amont of gear oil in the lower end water cavity and when you let down it runs out of the cavity out of those holes. And wont leak until driven again. the tech that presure tested it told me that there is pressure being created while its driven that forces the gear oil out and after you stop it pulls water in.
Although I did not do the repair itself I did remove and replace the lower end and impeller down to the seal and this is what I saw. I hope that helps.:dono
Good info! Thanks
