I have the 788 on the bow with the transducer mounted on my trolling motor. You will love the DI when looking at structure. Humminbird had issues with erratic depth changes when used with the trolling motor. I experienced it also when the trolling motor is running. I downloaded the latest update for the unit, which is suppose to fix this. I haven't had the boat out this spring so hopefully it works.
Less than two years later I am having issues.
Was out on the Ohio in november hunting and it was pretty cold. Ran some chop and I guess it vibrated the head unit just enough to lose power. Had issues since then with it wanting to come on momentarily and get to the legal disclaimer/accept screen and then go all white. Only way to turn the head unit off is to pull it off the quick connect thing.
I tried it yesterday in the barn on the boat since it had warmed up and now I only get the all white screen. Humminbird wants 200+ to repair it since it is out of warranty.
I disconnected the metal plate that holds the power and transducer cables and tried to snug them up higher and tightened back down my screens. That didn't help either.
Anybody run into this issue with this model or this issue with another model? What was the fix if you did?
I would start by checking the power supply for the unit. Ensure that you are getting 12 volts at the power cable. Check all connections for any that are loose or corroded. It would be best of you could temporarily connect the power cable to a known good battery or test it on someone else’s boat that has a Humminbird unit (connect only the power cable). If that still does not help than you may have to return it for servicing.
You might try taking the cables out of the quick connect and plugging them directly into the unit to see if it still may be a connection issue...

Hey Rickie how about the far rite ring after we put that on mine it only freaks out in shallow water with the trolling motor on
Thanks Greg. I will get the meter out tonight and test it.
Also, plugging the cables directly into the unit sounds like a good way to check it after I ensure I am getting 12v to it.
Thought it was kind of odd that it was working perfect before that one morning in the dark when I momentarily lost the screen. It would come back on and work but would "flatline" the screen before it picked up satellites. Now I get nothing but a white screen.
I changed out the cable but still had the same issue
The wire was skinned but that was not the fix. After I put the ferrite ring on it only gets goofy in shallow water with the trolling motor on
cajun fryer, call the Humminbird Customer resource folks and try what they recommend next.
What frequency settings do I need to keep this thing on to maintain a clear picture? I never fish deeper than 20 foot of water.
It has been so long since it worked right and I actually used it for fishing I have forgotten what everything on it does. I try and keep it on DI or split screen traditional sonar and DI.
Switchfire Clear and raise the Sensitivity to an acceptable amount of clutter ...
Beam Frequency 455kHz (2d) will give a clearer screen ...but will also have less coverage under the boat ...
Can you post some screenshots ... ??
You may have an issue going on that is not evident without seeing pix ...

Rick, I get out so infrequently it might be a month or better before I can post screen shots. I will try though. It is coming a daggum blizzard here now though.
I'm going to try hard to get to the river soon to go after sauger and walleye though. Next weekend might be it.
Rickie,
I got out on Nolin for a few hours and have screen shots for you, not sure how to go from phone to here though.
First part of the day I had no temp then it started showing on the screen but it was obviously wrong. -3.0°f was what it was showing.
I did use those settings you have above and that helped. I started showing big clouds of what I had to guess where shad but nothing with them.
Give me a day or two to get to a desktop and I will post the two screens.

These are the settings I am using. Mostly using DI over the regular sonar or will run a split.

Any idea how to fix this temp issue? I started the day saturday with no temp showing, then it showed on its own about halfway through the day but it was way, way off. Yesterday I never saw a temp.
Plus I lose bottom at anything aver 15 mph.
There are reports of issues when "Bird's eye view" is Visable ...
There are reports of issues with corrupt Waypoints ...
It it may be beneficial to export your Waypoints and check them in HBPC for weird dates or duplicate Waypoints ...
When your Waypoints are safely backed up into HBPC ...
"Format NAV Directories" under the setup tab ...
"Restore Defaults" under the Setup tab ...
Make Hidden all views that contain "Bird's Eye view" ...
Test and report back ...
Rickie
How do I export waypoints? I have to use an SD card as I do not have an ethernet port or other way to connect to a pc.
I typically do not use the bird's eye view, I use a straight aerial view when running. I only used that view then to show the temperature issue. It occurs no matter what view I am in.
*Insert a blank formatted SD Card into the card slot ...
*Press Menu twice to get into the Main Menu System ...
*Cursor over to the NAV tab ...
*Cursor down to Waypoints Routes Tracks ...
*Cursor right to open Waypoint Management ...
*Cursor to highlight Options ...
*Cursor right to open Options Menu ...
*Cursor to "Select All and..." ...
*Cursor to Export ...
*Cursor right to activate Export ...
You should get a popup saying Saved to SD Card ...
*Open HBPC on your PC and insert SD Card in your PC Card reader ...
*The SD Card icon should show in the left of HBPC ...
*Click on the arrow under the SD Card icon that says "Download" ...
The gpx file should appear just to the right of the SD Card icon ...
*Click on the + sign next to the gpx file name ...
*Click on Waypoints in the dropdown menu ...
Your Waypoints should appear in the right pane ...
*Click on the "Date" tab to sort by date ...Check the dates for weird dates ... Like 1960's weird ...
*Click on the "Name" tab to sort by name ... Check for duplicate Waypoints ...
Once you have your Waypoints safely imported into HBPC ... It is safe to "Format the NAV directories" in the unit and Restore Defaults for testing ...
Remember to make Hidden all Bird's Eye views before testing ...

I got her cleaned off and factory defaults reset. I'm out in the barn right now and I still don't show a temp. I know I'm not in the water but in the past it has shown the air temp when out of the water.
It doesn't even give me the option to choose temperature in the select readouts menu.
If you are in Simulator it will not give you the temp option ...
If you are in Normal ... There is something wrong ...it should give air temp in Normal ...
Before you call HB ... You might disassemble the cables out of the mount and plug them straight into the sockets ...
Also make sure pin #5 is in tack in the xducer cable end connector ...

I pulled the head unit off for the first time since I got it back from the factory. I vowed not to remove it after all the issues I had with it losing power connection.
I had temp this past saturday, albeit a very wrong temp, now nothing. I will check the pin condition and report back.
I had put a dab of electronics grease on those connections when I got it back from the factory. Is that a good practice or could that cause issues.
I am starting to think I just got a lemon.
I'll use some circuit cleaner and get it off there then.
Think I have a bad connection on the wire going into the transducer. I wiggled it and temp came back. Started charging batteries so turned it off. When I was done with the batteries I turned it back on the see what voltage it was getting and temp was gone again. No amount of wire wiggling got it back either. I'll probably buy a new transducer.
