pulley to lift fish holding pen

Hi all,

I am needing a pulley system to help me lift a fish holding pen out of the water. I do not always want to clean fish the day I catch them so I will use a fish holding cage at my dock. I know to watch the daily limit of fish kept in it. I am not sure how to rig a pulley system up in the rafters of the dock cover. I have no way of welding anything so it must be bolted in. I thought I would use a cleat to tie it off, but a small hand crank winch would be much easier. Cage would be about 2' by 2' sort of round. How do I need to rig up a pulley system? Number of pulleys? Placed where? Any thoughts would be appreciated. I just cannot lift the fish pen when I fill it with all those crappie I am going to catch soon. :biggrin Thanks! Peke

go to your local hardware store and get a small snatch block. it should have an eye on the end. i would just put a small chain over the rafter. put a blot through the chain and snatch block to hold it up in the rafters.then either put your rope or cable off the winch through it.the chian will give adjustment room if the cable is not long enough.if you have to you can bolt the winch to the edge of your dock where the handle will hang off the edge. that way you would be able to crank the handle. hope this idea helps.

We use an old washing machine wash tub, works well because it's round and the fish don't scuff themselves up on any sharp corners. Use a boat wench and cable to lower\raise them in and out of the water. You're on the right track, good luck.

KD- thanks, but I have no idea what a blot is. "put a blot through the chain and snatch block to hold it up in the rafters." I will google it to see if I can find a picture. I'll need to figure out a snatch block too. Thanks for the idea because I have no idea what I am doing.

Stink- I found a boat winch so I just have to figure out how to rig the pulley.

You know, my husband might like the idea of having a "boat wench" just standing on the dock...young and blond.....nah, better not. I wouldn't want him getting any ideas! Sorry, I just couldn't resist. Rofl

No crappie at my dock yet, Stink, except for the little ones. I check every night. We were headed to Durango, Colorado when you called a couple of weeks ago. Nice to hear from you. I will give you a call as soon as I see them in case you want to "visit with your crappie pole".

I forgot to ask... Stink, do you have a lid for the washing machine drum?

Peke im sorry i am used to what we called them in the logging woods. It is a single eye pully system. You can get them at lowes homedepot or any hardware store. At lowes they will be back in the arra where the screws and bolts and nuts are. Usually there is someone there that makes keys and such. The bulk rope cable and chainis located at. I tried to find a picture of the setup i was talking about but no a avail. I wish i vould help more.

Patti, we have a wooden lid that folds so you can set it inside the support chains holding the basket, then fold it outwards to cover the fish and prevent the raccoons from helping themselves. Good to see you back in here posting girl.......... you dock wench you!:crazy:

Sure will, next time I go down to the dock, I'll take a picture and post it here for you.

I use a 30 gallon plastic barrel to keep my fish in at the dock. I drilled a lot of 1" holes around the barrel and cut half of the top out and attached hinges for a lid. The more holes, the less resitance when hoisting it out of the water. I use a rope hoist to raise it and lower it in my boat slip. It works well. Do a search for TEKTON 5550 Rope Hoist. You can get them at several places for less than $10. I've had this set up in my dock for over 10 yrs and it works well.

Stink, I never get to post during the school year until testing time is over. My Chinese student that I work with for 2 hours after school just moved so I now have more free time. Just in time for crappie spawn! Can't wait to see the picture!

We had a raccoon set up his home on the pontoon boat on our dock. Fish parts on the dock and nice, brown stinky "presents" left in the boat transom. What a mess to clean up. Is it the transom that is by the motor? Whatever it is called.
