I got around 30-50 that's been in there since last summer. Without recirulating pump. The water was green. I added the pump and the shade hoping to do better. It's a 600 gal pond. 3' deep.

theyre called rosy reds. and they are the bees knees. more expensive, but sweet.
I LOVE the rosy red's!!! They are awesome to fish with!!
How many you and ATM got so far?
10.... Just got back from lunch...gonna try some more. Windy as heck.
Gator I don't know how they do it down in Mississippi but I have a Bait Shop at home in Springfield, MO that sells me minnows by the pound. I only do that when I am buying alot of them to fill my minnow tank. I seem to get a better deal by purchasing them by the pound instead of by the dozen.
BRM knows a place in Memphis you can buy them by the pound cheap.
I've been wanting to build a minnow tank also. Keep us posted how it works out.
birds and snakes my give you a problem with a in ground tank..just a thought.
Red tuffies have been around forever. Friend of mine has been growing them for over 20 years.

Gator another thing I do is I mix the sizes a little bit. If I know I won't be using alot of minnows really fast I sometimes purchase the size that I like then some smaller because if you feed them they will grow fast.
Tks for info, I started this last year to save minnows I had left ovwr. Those minnows grew to over 3" long in no time at all. I thought I might save a little $ if I bought them in a large quantity.
How is your tank set-up? My husband has tried in 100+ gallon Rubbermaid tub. "I call it a watering trough"! But anyways, the minnows always die within 24 hrs! We fill the tank and let it sit for at least 24 hrs before putting the fish in there, but it's not working!
A pound of #6 minners is about 14 doz. more than a gross. They grade minnows by the weight of 1000 minnows. A 1000 #6 minnow weighs 6 pounds. A pound should be 1000 divided by 6, which equals 166.66667 minnows, or 13.8888889 dozen minnows. Give or take 1 minnow.
I can buy 1000 or 6 pounds for 55.00. or 500, 3 pounds for 27.50. That's a bit over 9.00 a pound. You can get them in Paragould AR. for 6-7 a pound.

You can buy all the minnows you want in Lonoke or Prarie counties for $5 a pound or less. Haven't hauled any out of Paragould in several years, so I don't know about there. What you fishing for with #6 minners. I've been gettin 12s and cutting the top off with a #25 grader.
name a few of these places please.. preferably in prarie
In Prarie you have the SAUL Fish Farms.(2 of them) One right in DeValls Bluff and one north of town a couple of miles. In Lonoke you have Billie McCallie minnow farm north of Carlise on Hwy 13 about six miles. Anderson Brothers. One 3 miles west of Carlise off of Hwy 70 the a half mile north on Northcutt Road. The other Andersons is about 3 miles west of the town of Lonoke on Hwy 70.

OLD GEEZER FISHERMEN NEVER DIE, THEY JUST SMELL THAT WAY!!
My mother bought the pond, pump, and filter a few years ago. Never used it. She gave it all to me last summer. Free!
And I was wrong about the depth its 20" deep, 6' x 4' LxW.
120 gal.
I have kept 10 lbs. of minnows before in a plastic 55 gal. barrel with a 110v airator and they did fine. Had a screen on the top to keep the critters out.
thank you so much. will be fishing south of stuttgart so it works out just right.
Since we started this thread with rosey minnows, that's where I'll start. They aren't new, they been around for a while. I'm 60, my dad used them whenever he could find them. I remember that from when I was about 4 or 5 years old.
A barrel or a tub from the co-op buried over halfway in a nice shady spot should work in keeping the water cool. With that much water, you want to let it set for 4 or 5 days before adding minnows. When doing water change outs, let 5 gallon buckets sit for a couple of days before changing the water. Never over half of the old water. Add 1 teaspoon of plain salt to 5 gallons of water. Try not to add hotter water than what is in the tank, add ice to it if you have too. No more than once a month. Try not to stir up the muck from the bottom of the tank.
Pumps and filters, check goodwill. The hernando store has had them in the past at some great prices. But heck, check them all. I picked up a sump pump, a bit strong for this job. It was prices 29.99, I guess the girl had a hard time reading. She charged me 2.99. I got one of those hang on pump/filter things for fish tanks for 9.99 for my granddaughter. My son said they cost 49.99 at petco.
looks good man
