older auto pilot trouble
I bought a used autopilot 812 ,sometimes it has a mind of its own.I called M-K and they tell me the compass goes bad the liquid evaporates and so forth Is this part something I can do or a dealer only ,wondering if I can drill a small hole add water and hot glue or silicon it shut and try it

What's the symptoms when you say..."mind of it's own"? Does it start spinning left or right eraditcally and you're forced to hit the pedal to stop it or turn the AP off?
-
-
Yes it will go either all the way left or right

I don't know anything about that motor but would suggest that if you add any liquid it might ought to be mineral oil or something like that instead of water. Might send CanePole a PM since he is very knowledgeable on those motors.

I don't know what a 812 is???? Need p/n on compass/autopilot circuit if possible. TM part no would help a lot.

Yeah, that's not water that they use in them. A couple things to check that can cause that is bad/loose power connections and when the motor is deployed the shaft must be within 5° of verticle.
This is from the manual
PART I - Case VI. AutoPilot function is erratic and doesn’t maintain a heading.
Step 1.
Make sure motor is mounted within 5 degrees of level and there is no ferrous metal object(s) near the motor that
may be affecting the compass (including screws and/or nuts).
Step 2.
Check motor for excessive vibration. Inspect propeller and propeller shaft for damage. (Excessive vibration
can cause the AutoPilot compass to oscillate causing erratic operation.)
Step 3.
Check for proper voltage to motor while motor is under load. AutoPilot steering is susceptible to erratic
operation in low voltage situations. (Use of adequate wire gauge in boat or any leadwire extension is critical to
avoid voltage drop / low voltage to the motor; as can an inadequate or corroded plug / plug receptacle.)

Here is another place for parts. Quick shipment also. I do not own or work for this company.

You can get an AP compass board off of eBay brand new for pretty cheap if you're sure that's where the problem is after troubleshooting.

Thanks guys Ive been working (12 hr shift worker here)Sry i havent had time to get back to all the replies all connections are good ive borrowed foot petal the guy said works on his and still does the same thing, its an older model auto=pilot with the rectangle type plug ,the compass on mine doesnt have as much liquid as my buddies does ,it does have a vibration at higher speed but not on my trolling speed ,shaft doesnt seem bent or cracked,is the compass something I change myself im pretty good at tinkering on stuff ,but im not an electronic tech by no means, the 5 degree +/- angle is pretty close ive shimmed it on the water ,i have a 1648 polar craft walking around in it makes motor readjust itself some,I can run the auto-pilot for awhile and it works then ill adjust my course and sometimes it starts acting erractic, ill turn it off auto and run it then go back to auto-pilot 10-15 mins later and itll work again ,Thanks again ,maybe ill get a compass for it
