This is the reslut from breaking my cherry at tying a crappie jig lol pics arent that great took them from my phone. couple heads are powder paint green pumkin red flake with channile and marabou i tried a grey minnow style , a kinda version of electric chicken , and a updated flashier electric chickenAttachment 84650Attachment 84656Attachment 84657
well they look good. the last 1 would kill on lake conway. now on the first 2 jigs a little less tail profile. so they dont short strike it.

Thank you and Thank you again thats a helpful hint for sure. It just hit me how much longer they looked after they got wet from the marabou. That is a good tip for sure, is there a kinda guide to just how far the marabou or bucktail should stick past the bend of the hook? I know i got ALOT to learn for sure but this is gratifying and by the time your done the cost is alot cheaper than always buying ready made jigs lol. I appreciate any helpful tips and criticism.
I must admit, I didnt see the jig at first in the first picture...I saw the box or whatever for the vise in the background and thought, dang, thats a tiny hook, even for a trout fly!
Nice Jigs, the tail I would say just short and less Marabou......also not sure if its the pics or what(im sure its how the pics look and not the jig) but on 1 or 2 of them the chenilles looks to have gaps between the wraps. They are nice, my first jigs did not look like that...mine were more like a Pre-K did them in art class!! LOL

Very nice! I've heard when you measure the bucktail or marabou, you should line the end of the hair with the first knuckle of your thumb. Try it.. It's been wurkin' for me! Nice ties!
Thank you everyone for the kind words and helpful tips!! I have spent the last day checking out videos and some web sites and have learned ALOT ! Now to try and match the local hatch got a list to make minnows especially the wild honeyheads which are almost double the size of the local bait shop minnows. differant variations of the electric chicken and some old faithfuls, possibly going to attemp a grass shrimp replica thats the one i know i will have fun with lol. I find tying crappie jigs Fun and addicting lol
Can i get a little feedback on those new style sickle hooks with the wild bend are they a better hookup than the standard hooks? They look pretty mean and im tempted to try them out? Whats your take on them?
Less tail feathers and use a jig with a #4 sickle hook will be nice. Welcome from Alabama.

Not a bad start to jig tying and welcome. Once you get the jigs wet you will see how much tail to use on your jigs. I use my index finger to measure the material for the tail. 1/32 the first joint- 1/16 half way between the first and second joint and 1/8 is to the second joint. Just my way of doing it and you will learn the best way for yourself.
Have fun with your tying. It will not take long before you find out it cost a lot more to tie than to just go buy em... the ordering of more materials never seem to stop :)

Those camouflage jigs are working just fine...lol. A tip would be to use the chenille to cover your thread wraps of the tail feathers.

Remove the fibers from the stem of the maribou, then cut the butts off, then tie them in so you have the fine tips in use. That black/gray is a real winner here. Nice work for starters.
Don't worry as too much about Crappie cause they are not near as picky as fishermen. Those look fine for a beginer for sure.
Thank you EVERYONE for the kind words and tips!!! Every little bit helps and i have tied about a dozen jigs this weekend various styles and all tips and trial and error have made a huge differance. This is awsome and fullfilling to do your own jigs and IM HOOKED lol
