I'm getting kind of tired of having a million tiny pieces of trash in my lap and on the floor. I know some of the higher-end vise manufacturers offer a clamp-on waste container but most of their stuff costs way more than I'm willing to spend.
Anybody have any ingeneous ideas to catch the debris? I prefer to make my own so I can customize it to my needs, but it would be great to have the "headstart" of your experience.
Even though I have a waste basket under my vise I still tie with a plastic trash can with bag between my legs.
I keep a large coffee can w/ lid on my desk and empty it as required.

I use a 5 gallon orange Home depot bucket with a 10 gal tall kitchen trash bag in side it . I keep pushing it down and after 4 months I empty it .Things at my house my be disorganized but not all that dirty.

That's the same solution I use for my shop trash bin...but this jig-tying stuff is too light. If you push down it goes flying in the air. It's darn near impossible to sweep it up with a broom because it just flies (like trying to sweep broken styrofoam...maddening!)Quote:

A bit off the original topic but one of my best investments for my tying area is a small "Dustbuster" type vacuum that stays at my bench. I clean up all the little scraps as I go and don't have much of a mess ever. FWIW my tying area is in our master bedroom and my wife hasn't given me any grief about the mess since I got the vacuum.
I think I would go with drawer slides and undermount a small waste basket off to one side. Pull the can out, sweep of the hand into the basket, push basket back under desk. The basket could hang by it's lip and would be easy to remove by just sliding it out of the drawer slides.
That's a great idea. I think my shop table has a 3"-4" lip on it. And I'm sure my wife has a spare dustbuster around somewhere.Quote:

I used a 9x14 baking pan. Cut two 1x3 with a 1/4 slot down one edge and screwed them under my tying desk. When I'm tying I slide it out to catch all the drops and can push it in when not tying. When it gets full, pull it out and empty. Works very well for just a few dollar investment ;)

I cut a hole in my makeshift bench to hold a small flip top and mounted a removable box underneath. Amazing what you can come up with when I go to dump it.
Only pic I have but it's the white portion on the middle of the farther right table.

Some very good ideas. Nice benches too by the way. I use the kitchen table. Im a newbie. And for the mess, I use a paper plate and when I'm done, I put another paper plate on top(very gently) until I can get to the trash can with it, and dump it out. Old school I guess.
bd Guess that I for got to mention that if you bunch the plastic trash bag up a few time that it will get a static charge on it and the excess feathers and hair waste will be attracted to the bag. May sound stupid but it works for me. BTW I use the cheapest bags I can find for the tying waste they seem to take a better static charge than the expensive Glad type expandable kind. Never tried it but the plastic bags that they give at the grocery and Wally world to carry home the goods ( known in this neck of the woods as Wal-Mart luggage ) may work even better and they are free.

Go to hobby lobby get a med sized craft ring take it apart put a zip lock bag on it put the other part around the neck of you're vise then put part with the zip lock
back into the ring around the vise.
2x on the dust buster. I use a 5 gallon bucket on the floor. I also have one of my wife's old carpet doormats on the floor to "hold" anything that misses the bucket.Quote:

I took a regular wire coat hanger and made rounded holes on both ends that my vise stem would fit through and then just put a plastic bag in it.

Just to close the loop in this thread...as though anyone cared...here's the solution I came up with for a wastebasket.
It's a 2" x 12" plastic drawer organizer (my wife has zillions of them; Mrs. Organization) with "key slots" drilled/dremeled into the side, and held to the workbench lip with a couple of screws. The screw holes are countersunk in the workbench lip so I can bury the screws out of the way when not in use. A moist paper towel in the bottom of the tray keeps marabou, etc from taking flight if I sneeze.
It's in a handy position when I'm cutting something that I'm holding, or to catch cuttings off of the vise. Anything that lands on the table is easily swept into the tray.
