NICE! I think you did a great job. Looks like I need fishing and hunting instructions from you.
That is a nice mount especially for your first one.
From a past time taxidermist I'd say excellent work for the first time. Maybe a little more studying the eye form but still a really good job.
Remarkable job for a first effort. I have paid good money for mounts that didn't look that good...
It looks great to me. Doesn't look like a first one.
Thanks it is my first. Yep on the eyes as probably the hardest part.
Nice deer and a nice job on the mount. I'd never guess it wasn't done by an old pro.
Good job!
looks nice
I think you need a couple more inches on those horns J.W., LOL!! Just kiddin', you did a great job! When I get my four lb crappie I'll know who to call....

That's an awesone buck! You did a great job...one suggestion...don't leave 'em on the tree tho. :bash
Good job, especially for your first effort. Many I've seen that didn't look that good~
Hey thanks guys. I always trying to learn something new. I still have a lot to learn though on taxidermy.
I've looked it over and one thing comes to mind that would look better. Everything looks good, but I think it would be better over MY fireplace.
Dang db u had me going lol

My advice is to get some close up live deer photos for reference to help with anatomy of the deer eyes, ear placement and shape, and overall attitude. The eyes give the mount the overall look, either relaxed, alert, spooked, aggressive and so on. Good job on your first mount. You will find a challenge with each deer you do, as some have their own particular issues, such as ticks, lots and lots of ticks, depending on the time of year and temp the ticks can really play heck with the ears especially. The deer will try to scratch those ticks off from the back of the ears and in turn remove hair in doing so. This then makes turning ears very painful at times, as the hide is very thin in such a situation, only thing you can do is keep it as hydrated as possible, and skin it as soon as it has died to turn those ears while they are still relatively easy to turn.
I have found a deer that is skinned and fleshed and ears, eyes, nose, and lips turn easier than freezing it then trying to work on it later. Just my opinion though.
But reference photos will help you shape those eyes and ears for that matter to the correct angles and size that they should be. I take a lot of measurements with calipers to get exact eye size and ear distances as well, you dont have to do this and most dont, I just like to get it as close to the real thing as possible. Quality pickle, and tanning is a must for a mount to last. Along with adequate fleshing and shaving of the hide. Good luck to you.
Looks great
Good advice. Do you have any goo reference picts you can share? I totally understand what you are saying.
The only problem i have with that one is i didnt shoot it!!!!! Looks outstanding!!!

Great job!!!!. I liked the early pics that made him look wet.
The best ones I had came from a live deer pen. But lost them cause my computer did a hard drive crash and was unrecoverable. But if you get any outdoor magazines or know people that do, ask them to keep the old ones for you. Some of them have some great close ups as times. Go to Mckenzie Taxiedermy supply, they have reference photos for purchase. I dont think much of them but they are better than nothing. Or just search the magazines like I said, even at the barber shop, doctors office or wherever there is a waiting room.
Ok good idea
Also do a Google search for Whitetail deer and then click on images only, it will filter to just photos of deer, sometimes you get some good ones to show up. Then just click on it to get it to come up, right click on it and save as whatever you want to call it and save to desk top or to a folder you create on desk top just for pictures. That way if you have a decent color printer you can print them off and tape or pin them up next to the deer while you work on it.
Very Nice Mount JW, Congrats.
looks dang good imo!!
