Tim, I have never fished the stumps out in the main lake in that area either. I have fished the stumps in both of those creeks in the spring and if it is on, it can be phenominal. It can be an early deal, like right now, but a little cold front can really slow it down in a hurry. In 2-3 weeks the cold fronts won't bother them in there quite so bad. I guess what I am saying they are definately worth fishing but can be more inconsistent than some other places on the lake.

I almost never go up there. It's dangerous. If you do go up there, don't get above an idle. Those stumps kill people regularly. It's only been 2 or 3 years since a man and his girlfriend were pulled out of the lake. There's plenty of crappie down lake anyways.
I used to knw a bunch of guys from Chelsea that would put in small boats on the shallow end of Salt Creek and run down the creek. They caught a lot fo crappie and sandies. I ahve never fished the main lake up there. True, you don't want to run fast, nor do you want to take a boat that would be hurt by stump jumpin'.
I've ventured up from wigganon a couple of times to fish the standing timber out near the main channel. I rarely do so because of the wind but would love to sneak in there during the spawn. Lots of bigger Crappie up that way due to lack of pressure. Double Creek is not an option to me since it takes over two miles of stump fields to get into deeper waters.
I was thinking about Lightning Creek or coming down from Big Creek. What abotu lower Kentucky creek and the Moon Lake area?
I once found the ramp at Lightening creek and it was nothing more than a mudhole. I don't remember the lake level at the time, but I could tell that no way could a person launch a boat and stay connected with water to get into the stumps. If you're thinking Big Creek for access, I suggest you Google Earth the entire area. I just went through that and it's actually quite the boat ride down river just to get to the lake itself. I would venture to say your best bet by boat would be launching at Allens Point or East Side ramp. East Side is known for theft to vehicles too, so.... Find the lightening creek ramp and use a two man scamp or Sunny Side, Vada Point or Allens Point and burn some fuel heading North and hope the wind stays reasonable for you while you're out and about. Thanks man. I put the duck boat in at Lightning Creek in January with the lake up about 6". running down the creek was tough, but doable. I have a 6" hycraulic jack plate on it or it would not have been.
I have made the run down the river from Big Creek many times and it IS long, about 5 miles I think.
No doubt though, any of my duck hunting launches would only be worthwhile if the fish were tright there when you go there.
The lake should be a little up after the rain, especially since they got a bit more N of the border. You might do well and it could be very productive. The cold front may have stinted their run for now, but, there's no reason why you couldn't come across a section of the creek channel they could be holding/staging in. Look at Crappie Chatts Glenn Elder article, picture #9 and you'll get the idea.
Tim I have fished the standing timber on the east end out from lightning before and its is hit and miss! I launched at the WMA ramp in lightning and fished the creek until you get back to the big log jam. Also I have fished double creek but launched in the creek and fished the whole thing in a day! We were fishing staumps and laydowns in June when it started getting warm, shallow summertime creek pattern. All of that up there looks really good to me, but reminds me of the stump fields between Gentry and the Deep fork river! Not alot of people will take a full day take there time and fish these areas, you have to get started early on a mild wind day and make a day of it! There is also a little creek between Wiganon and Double but me or Odie doesnt know the name of it! EB

Thanx for the advice Brian. When I think summer creek pattern I think in terms of 12' steep banks a d trees. is that what you are talking about? The only problem I see with that up there is the lack of water that deep.
Yeah the stumps are THICK! and it does remind me of the Hichita bottoms. I was thinking more in terms of fishing a spawn pattern in the 5' or shallower main lake stump beds. What do you think about that?
If the lake is high, or if the lake is low, it is much safer to target those stumps in the main lake. But only if the winds are very calm! There are tons of fish up there, and large ones too! Great Summer area to fish, but you gotta use your head, or trouble is just one wave away! We nearly lost our boat up there in 38FOW! We were rolling and rocking and came down on a stump that started a leak that our bilge couldn't keep up with. Barely made it to bank!! But with that said, I know that the winners for CAST's classic were fishing right next to us up there. We ended up in 10th & had 2nd biggest fish for that one, but only weighed 13/14 fish in the two day event. Zebra mussels cut off several good fish for us, and we lost a hog at the net too. Any one fish more would of put us in 2nd or 3rd, but thats the way it goes! LOL! Big bites, full baskets, and God's blessings to ya!
