Can I mix powder paints (Pro-Tec) and achieve a true color? i.e. can I mix blue and yellow to get green? Or, will I get a jig head with swirls of blue and swirls of yellow? (which might look neat, but not what I want).
I have a fluid bed and suspect it would be best to use that, correct?
It's probably best to just pay the $2 and buy the color(s) I want, but I'm curious about this.
I would just test is a small amount to see what happens. I have mixed some green and Fl Yellow to maybe it was Fl Chart, just don't remember, but got an in-between green. Have mixed some other and got not what I wanted at all. So have not done a lot of that.
You can mix colors if they are close in the color spectrum and get a pretty good mix. If you were to mix colors farther apart you will get a grainy mix. A lot of times it looks good, but you will not get a true color mix.
That is what I found when I mixed some colors, don't remember for sure, but think it was white and Blue trying to get a different Blue and didn't care for the result.Quote:

I have mixed blaze orange and flo yellow to get a pumkin orange color, worked pretty good. Did the same with the blue and white to get a robin egg look.
Sticksteer - yeah I saw that color mix on TJ's site and don't know what happened wicked Brain fart I think LOL but I mixed Blaze orange and Florescent Red DUH!!! and it really looked like a dark orange - I've tried to fix it but I haven't done any painting in a few days.
I've got a couple of olive colors I've mixed, the one on the left is black and yellow mixed 1-1, the one on the left is the mix with white added to lighten it up. The mix ratio I used was listed wrong so that's how I got the mix above. The right mix ratio is 1 Part Black and 2 parts yellow. But I like the two shades I got!!

I mixed black and white, attempting gray. The white was a new jar and lumpy when I opened it. I didn't have time to return it and start again so I ground it as best I could, mortar and pestle style and ran with what I got. Those of you that were in the swap and received jigs from me got some of this effort. I got gray with an occasional white spot, looked cool but not what I was after. If I were to experiment I would start with the dark and add the lighter til I got what I was after. Maybe when I start buying by the pound I'll get a little more experimental.
If powder paint mixes anything like liquid paint, you'd be adding white to the black for a long, long time to get gray. If I remember correctly 18% gray (standard photo reference gray; about the same shade as the borders used on this website) is 1 part black to 20 parts white. Better to start with white and add black in very small amounts. Powder paint might be different.Quote:

I have mixed a lot of colors and gotten some really funky results. Metallic with colors to get a pearlized type finish. Gold with black and got a speckled ugly something color. Yellow and darker green and got speckled frog color. Silver and purple and got a really cool oiled silver over purple look.
I have not managed to get a true color when mixing like paint. Always a speckled look if you get right up close. From a foot away it looks like one color. Guess to a fish it really isn't gonna matter if it is a true blend or speckled result that looks like another color from a distance.
And I would definitely use a fluid bed!!! Unless you want a marbled or at best heavy speckled result. Just my results, others may not use a fluid bed and get good clean results. I am too impatient to mix and mix and mix to get a perfect mix without a fluid bed.
