I've found a few places with 5' of water and want to spider rig it. I normally use Capps and Coleman rigs but it seems like they are to long. Would you make a shorter version, one with a weight on bottom and 1 hook above it, or jigs? Any advise would be appreciated.
I think your double minnow rig will work fine, use a 1/4 oz wgt CC style, if you start getting hung up allot go shallower or rig poles with just one minnow or jig, that shallow tho i would really just consider one bait below the wgt, fishing that shallow I feel that two baits just aint worth the trouble... if you know what i mean.
i use the C&C rigs and tied some myself, and usually drop it to bottom and give it a few cranks up off bottom and start there. I recently fished those rigs with the top hook about 3ft deep in about 6FOW
Put your minnow or jig on the bottom and then put a 1/2 oz weight about 16 inches above it! The Bullshot weight works great in that situation. A two-hook rig in that depth ain't worth the trouble. That's all you need. If the water is clear use long rods.
I might try two 1/8 jigs with a naked minnow or maybe a jig and minnow about 1' to18" apart. 1/4 oz jigs if the wind was bad.

Why 1/2 oz wieght in that shallow of water?, i can see it... if it's windy or deeper, so im guessing you like the heavier weight to keep it down incase you want to troll faster and keep the bait down. Also why do you like a bullshot wieght over a egg sinker? Just wondering cos I know Steve and David are some great trollers who we can learn some things from.
That's right Russ, it's to keep the bait down.....lots of times in that shallow water they like it moving fast and you need the weight to keep it down. But you may not necessarily want the weight to be in the jighead. There are times they won't take a large jig and may be wanting a small bait presentation like a 1/32 on that particular day. The bullshot can be clipped onto the line with your fingers and also taken off instantly by prying open with the fingernails or a knifeblade so that if you decide to longline you won't have to cut the line to get the weight off. It saves time and eliminates one step when changing rigs. We used to use worm weights with split shot to hold them in place but that takes longer to re-rig. I like the fact that the Bullshot is bullet shaped and this lets it flow thru the water without any disruption. Some weights, especially the split shot with the tabs, will twist in the water like a propeller when trolling fast and that will put a twist in your line....not good. The Bullshots also come in different sizes so that your weight size can be changed nearly instantly without cutting the line....if you need one oz for weight simply clip another bullshot on the line! To me simpler is nearly always better and whatever lets you keep the baits in the water the most amount of time is what works.
