I would give up everything else, just to have GPS. If you fish a lake with a lot of timber, or make long runs, it can be a life saver literally, not to mention if a storm comes in and things get nasty. Even if this doesn't apply, if you ever find a spot that you would like to fish again, or you sink some structure, GPS sure makes it easy to go back to that spot every time. Having a known safe route to and from the ramp is priceless, to me. :santa
You could always get a handheld GPS.
If you are into other outdoor things like hunting etc.
If you do not have other uses, then I bet it would be as cheap to just buy the GPS build into the unit.
Garmin makes a few models that float.
I use an 778C and have it wired into an handheld Garmin.
It is nice to past something, notice it on the screen and mark a waypoint
I would give up my SI before I would give up my GPS...
SI may help eliminate "unproductive" water... But GPS will return me to "productive" water over and over...

If I had a choice of downscan and sidescan, or GPS, I'd have to go with the GPS. Doesn't do anygood to see something if you can't mark it. A gps with weighpoints will keep on giving back to you. If you ever out on lake and fog comes in, or unfamiliar with lake, They are worth their money. At least try a handheld if not the one in unit.
Academy local store has the Humminbird 587ci hd di for $469.00. I just bought one has color, sonar, GPS & Down Imaging. It looks real good from reading the manual, have not had it on water yet. You can read the manual online.
I started with a hand held gps five years ago and it helped me to be able to return to a spot that i had found. Then three years I got my fishfinder/gps chartplotter with lake maps that show channels and depth and bottom contours and this has been really helpful. May not use the gps all the time but its worth the money IMHO.
