What Ever Happened to Fishing Respect and Sportsmanship

Fished today and had a great day. Caught 2 limits, But had a guy follow us around and when we marked a bed to fish he would come by sidescan us and mark it. I started to tell him just wait and I would give him the waypoints where he would quit following us.. I know when I drop them in the lake, but come on at least wait till I'm not fishing them. If I see him fishing any of them I'm going to pull up and fish them with him and ask him how he likes where we put them..Sorry just had to vent..

#25 Never Mark a bed if somebody is near by!!

#28 Never continue to fish a bed if somebody is coming by!!

# 32 Use the boat to block the buoy marker!!

#36 Move, Move, Move and Move enough to make them tired of chasing you!!

# 50 NEVER TRUST A THIEF!!!!

And by the way Sportsmanship left decades ago but now every sucker that can afford to buy a side sweeper has accelerated the process to the point of no return!!!

I'm not sure he wasnt marking some of them..

I don't think any state has the advantage of lazy fishermen. Lazy is those who will watch others and steal the location. A friend of mine took me out last year to show me the advantages of fishing brush piles. One trick he uses is a small black marker he made. Cannot see it from very far away. He also will only take a couple off each pile and then move. Picking up his marker with his dip net. If someone was coming by, he would not land the fish, sometimes he one lose one, but he does not bring attention to a brush pile.

Not everyone that crappie fishes can afford a SI. And many of those are trying to learn.

I long line troll and the problem I have is bass fishermen. If I am trolling about 30 yards from the bank, it never fails that her comes a bass fisherman with a 200 plus hp, right in front of me. Ask one guy, what is your hurry, his response was "I need to get on the hole before you, what's your problem?" This is a public lake.

Sounds like a man driving down a road and he wants his share which is down the middle. Screw the rest of the drivers.

Thank god, we only have to deal with the 10% of the fishermen who are jerks. The 90% of use fish for fun.

Once its in the lake it is fair game.

It happed on Green to me Sat. Had the gps from the new hides that the fish and game had put in and a guy came within 20 ft behind me while I was fishing and within 3 ft of my long rods - running his big motor and then cut as close as he could in front of me. Usually have a bass rod rigged in the boat, but not this time. I believe I would have given him a lure upside of his head. lol....

I don't think the issue is so much the Side Imaging as the blatant way the guy went about it.

Spots get found & spots get swiped. To me there's a difference. Its been going on long before the SI came along. I can remember sitting in a boat with my grandpa and guys lining us up on the bank (that's the same thing a guy with an SI unit is do'n basically). Next time we'd come out there he'd be sit'n on the spot. That's swip'n. If you're just cruise'n along & happen to run over it... That's different in my eyes. Everybody here has done that.

You have to remember that 90% of the fish are in 10% of the water. There are "spots," be it a ledge, bend, hump, dip, point, etc... that tend hold fish. I can get on any creek channel in this lake and run it and find brush or stake beds. I can watch my chart & find a point & just about guarantee you I'll find something somebody put out. Just about every good "spot" in the lake has something on it. The original stuff that was in the lake when it was imponded is long gone. About anything that you find these days, was put out by somebody. So basically, if you fish anything that you didn't put out, you are fishing somebody else's stuff.

I have put out stake beds, buckets, brush piles, you name it & I guarantee you every bit of it has been found by somebody else because I put in on what I thought would be a "good" spot.

I put some buckets out on some spawning points a couple of years ago and the ripples on the water hadn't even cleared up good when 2 guys came over and marked them while I was going back for another load! You know where I'm talking about Buffalo. Now that kinda chapped my fanny. I knew they were gonna get found eventually cause I put them on good spawning points. But good Lord... At least wait till I'm gone to mark'um! That's kinda a slap in the face! :bash

We can't begrudge people for marking & fishing stuff we put out on these good spots, if they stumble across it. Now the guys that set on you like a buzzard on a gut wagon & mark it when you leave, or slide by you and scan the spot... That's a different story. I got a problem with that!

There are also guys that will "claim" a spot that they didn't put out. About 10 or so years ago I had a guy come up to me and a buddy and start insinuating that we were on "his spot." When I asked him if he had put the brush out there (knowing all along he didn't), he told me that he had fixed that spot for him & his son to fish. When that came outta his mouth I thought my buddy (rest his sole) was gonna come outta the boat on him! We had put that brush pile out 2 years prior. Dale stood up in the boat & started rake'n his rear end! I finally calmed Dale down & told the guy that he better make sure the guys that really put the stuff out, weren't the ones fish'n it, if he was gonna try to lay claim to it. :mad: We found out later that day that he did that crap all the time.

I actually appreciate hearing all this talk about etiquette on here. I come down once a year with some buddies from Illinois and certainly don't want to piss anyone off. Especially guys like brad and whiskers who have both helped me out a ton. Thanks fellas and sorry we will miss you this year whiskers.

I feel your animosity.I have it happen a lot. Drive by beepers! I have looked into GPS interference devices and thinking of building one. If that is what it takes to keep all the wantabe fisherman scratching their heads I think it would be funny. I started throwing my marker out at fake brush piles and fish them. You ought to see them try to find it. HaHa!

I'm not bashing the si I have one myself. It's the way he wen about it. As for you smashdn your right it is fair game but you don't have to be an a$@ about the way you mark them. I'll just fish it with him if he's fishing one I'll fish one side and let him fish the other.

Another problem is people not caring about our size limits on KY Lake.


Many people are keeping undersized Crappie. Either these people don't know KY Lake has a size limit, or they just don't care.

Some people will also keep too many fish per day.


Either way, please read and learn the rules before you fish here on KY Lake.

This is a common problem on ALL lakes and rivers, not just endemic to Ky. Lake.

Unfortunately there are unscrupulous people who fish too. We can preach, rant, rail as much as we want, you'll never change those people's minds. They have no regard for rules or regulations. They have no conscience when it comes to game/fish laws. They know the limits/size but they DON'T CARE. This why we need law enforcement on our lakes, at our ramps, on the shores below dams, to check people and to enforce the laws .

Law abiding citizens shouldn't fear game wardens, they should be happy when they see one. It means that they have a chance of stopping some bonehead with undersized fish or too many fish. Especially the guy that will go catch a limit in the morning take them home and go out again that evening for more. How many people have more than a two day limit in their freezers? The law says that is the "posession" limit, meaning that is all you are LEGALLY allowed to own/have/posess, no matter where you have them.

And what about people that go fishing every day? Do they really need 180 crappie filets in their freezer?? That is only three days limits and yet most of us know people who fish every day and keep fish every day. So it isn't only the knowingly unlawful who are abusing the resources, it is also the angler who buys his licenses, stamps, permits, etc. but who goes multiple times per week and keeps his catch every time he fishes. He is just as liable as the person who keeps short or too many fish.

I wake up my son and daughter hour and a half before daylight just to get to the lake, on the water, and to "my" spot before the next guy (Rough River). Some times I beat the rest, sometimes I don't. Any spot I fish on KY Lake is by chance. Usually don't get down there but once a year; and my timing is nearly perfect - should have been there last week or should come down next week. That's why I am buying some KY Crappie.com decals - so you nice folks out there hear my kids complaining about how Dad can't find a spot to fish - you can pull up to me and help me out. Actually, what we find that works is just asking permission. It works good enough for finding places to rabbit hunt, why not fishing.

Next time have Sixfin go all spider monkey on him that will run him off!
When I get down there we can fish on all sides of that boat that would be fun.

I live in central Ky and fish the smaller lakes, green and nolin. See all the same stuff here.
Yes, I fish other folks stuff that you are bound to run across if you use your sonar, and folks fish my stuff no big deal. But these guys that crowd you it really rubs me wrong.
I paint my markers green and use the boat as much as possible to hide them.
And never, ever bring in a fish when another boat is passing by.
Like it was said, we can fuss and fuss, but the only sure help is more law enforcement.
I personally love to see the wardens out and about.

That's alright buffalo, we'll be out soon, we'll send em swimming w/ the fishies, let em go for a dip.

That is NOT how it works in KY. The 2 day possession limit does not apply to processed fish in Kentucky. I can legally have as many fish in my freezer as I want.

This is straight out of the Ky Fishing Guide...

The daily creel limit is the
number of a particular sport fish
species you may keep in one day’s
fishing. A possession limit is two
times the daily creel limit for all fish
species with a daily creel limit and
excludes processed fish.

I just keep a cat rod handy with 30lb line and a 2oz weight tied on the end. Believe me, you cast that thing a LONG way and it makes a heck of a dent in aluminum and spiders up fiberglass well.
Not that I condone that type of behavior......

My biggest problem on the water is OTHER crappie fishermen, in particularly on my home lake Green River Lake. No common courtesy for other boaters and they'll cut your trolling path off in a heartbeat causing you to have to continuously alter course. I fish out of a bassboat and am courteous to others around me, but I have to say that I have a lot less trouble out of the guys with 250's hanging off the back then I do smaller tin boats that think they own the place and crawl all up into your rear end when they see that you're boating fish and they aren't.

That is NOT how it works in KY. The 2 day possession limit does not apply to processed fish in Kentucky. I can legally have as many fish in my freezer as I want.

Wiskers, thanks for that clarification about the posession limits of processed fish for KY. I haven't fished KY waters for a number of years and so haven't read the regs for that state. As I will be purchasing a KY license when the 2012's become available, I will then get a copy of the regs and bone up on them.

As far as TN is concerned, here is a transcript verbatim from their regulations: POSESSION LIMITS....The total posession limit is twice the daily creel limit. You may not have more than the daily creel limit with you while afield. It is unlawful to have, while afield, any fish which has been altered so that it's species and/or total body length cannot be determined."

So, for the guys that want to stop and filet their catch before traveling on home in the boat, be forewarned, they are going to be checking and issuing citations this year for that very practice. Unless you keep the carcasses with you, of course.

We all nseed to vent every once in a while. I too hate all the above. Trying to run someone off from a brush pile they did not make is quite brave and quite stupid which shows you where this person is upstairs. Follwoning someone with SI is quite lazy since they could find spots without following probably faster. So when you are dealing with lazy stupid people thats what you get. Thankfully not all fisherman are not lazy and stupid. I remember one year we were longlining at reelfoot in the same area as another fisherman that was spiderrigging. We took care to steer out of his way all morning occasionally passing within talking range. When they were done fishing he came and asked me if we had minnows. We were using jigs he gave us about a half of a pound of minnows. Curtesy never hurt anyone. Its up to us not to stoop to the stupid lazy fish and game hogs that are out there.
