I think just about any jig tipped with bait is a good bluegill bait. Last year, I just used a plain jig most of the time.
Sure would like to see a picture of these "ice jigs" ya'll using.
Well, here is just a few of what I use. Some from LA Baits. I have a bunch of them. Some with a barb to add plastics. The ball heads I use a wax worm on.Attachment 82430Hope this helps.

I haven't tried it but I've wondered the same thing. The ice jigs I'm thinking of don't have a jig head. The shank of the jig is thicker than normal (that's where the weight comes from) and the shank is somewhat flat like a spoon and usually brightly colored.
I've thought of keeping a jig pole rigged with an "ice jig" and tipping it with a wax worm or crappie-bite for vertical jigging. Alot of the time it seems like the bluegill where I fish will hit a crappie jig but not get it in their mouth.
Your talking about a "tear drop" all different colors, usually with a dot on the painted side, and silver or gold on the other.

These are some of the ice jigs ( known up north as pin mins. ) that I make. Can tip with small pieces of live bait waxworm , maggots , pieces of worm , crappie nuggets or small pieces of plastic.. They were designed for ice fishing but work well in open water also. There are local panfish specialists and these are all they ever use.. Never liked being limited by what you can buy so I started making my own when I was a youngster.
Lots of " snowbirds " and people that are retiring to live out there retirement in the south are using these at their new locations. From everything that I read they continue to do well on them. So much so that the home grown southern fishermen are getting interested in this " ice fishing " lure.
For size reference thats a 1/80 th oz jig.

No sorry I don't sell them. Learned a long time ago people want 5.00 lures for .99 . Bait shop down the road from me wants me to sell him jigs and these pin mins and other stuff I make. I make quality stuff and you can't get good results with cheap components. So I tell the owner I don't want to be making stuff for him to sale when I should be fishing.
Can't tell you how many I have given to kids though. Especially when I am ice fishing. I am onery enough to enjoy watching a a child outfish his dad on one of my pinmins.

I get them on there from RonDon LA Baits. I was just curious about the pin mins that he makes. I already got 100's of them, but you know how it is when you see something you don't have..
Go to the Ice Fishing forum and look around there. Also you might try a Google or Yahoo search on Panfish ice jigs and scroll through the images. There are dozens of pages of images, and you might also stumble across the Bikini Ice Fishing Team to provide a little voyeuristic side interest.Tear drops, pinmins, microspoons, mooskas, diamonds, balances, wolframs, fat boys, shad darts, dirty girty, gill getters, as many different names and styles as it seems possible to think up. There is even one called a Rat Finkee. Everybody has a few favorites and most tip them with plastics, waxies, spikes (maggots) or the little GULPS. They work year around, too. Most were originally brass or lead, but there is more and more tungsten coming into use all the time. Tungsten provides a nice bit of extra weight for its size and is more "eco-friendly", if that trips your trigger, but also costs quite a bit more. For this kind of lure I like the way it fishes, as we say it fishes heavy and gets back down quick, since it is significantly heavier than lead in the same sizes.In the summer I carry a few mooskas, diamonds, gill getters and shad darts in sizes 8-12 for when we stumble on a good sunnie bite and the crappies are not cooperating. Normally then I fish them under a tiny slip bobber, but not always. Where I can I prefer tight lining them like through the ice. Usually I also carry some 1" GULP minnows and some GULP Waxies to go along with them. That has produced a few nice crappies, too, when nothing else worked.
I use these alot, year round. Have caught alot of gills on them and even a few nice crappie. I like jamming jigs, they have a great selection of these jigs as well as alot of other small jigs in different styles like the gillpill and the panfish pounders. Their colors and paint patterns are topnotch and last forever, I have yet to have one peel or chip from use. We use the teardrop jigs all the time. They are excellent when fishing beds because of the rate of fall.

Since I replied to this thread a few days ago, I tried a modified tube jig and have been catching bluegill on it by vertical jigging.
I cut the skirt off of a small white "glow in the dark" tube jig and put the jig body on a 1/32 jig head (threaded the tube over the jighead so just the eye is showing). Hooked a wax worm dead center on the hook and it gives it a good slow fall with some fluttering action. The bluegill have been able to get the whole thing in their mouth with no problem. Not an ice jig but similarly sized in some ways.

speaking about these tiny ice spoons,i was downstairs for a good few hours soldering up some tiny tear drop spoons today.my janns netcraft order came in the mail this afternoon.i figured id like to get into these little spoons along with the other lures i enjoy making as well as jigs and flies.i think it will be interesting to throw one of these with the fly rod.hope it won't be too heavy,casting weighted flies can be a little awkward sometimes
