what's the best way to hook up a minnkota maximizer to a motorguide trolling motor???
Go from plug on boat to maximizer. Then from maximizer to trolling motor. I know maximizer has own stand but the closer you can get to your seat better off you will be. Not fun standing on your head and adjusting speed all day.
thanks for the info, will probably mount the speed control on my rod holder pipe within easy reach. Was going to redo another foot control but now think i'll just get another trolling motor plug and slip the maximizer inline with 12volts from boat.--shu
Tried this morning and doesn't work, wonder if i'm wired wrong, which set of wires should be input and which output???(one set is solid wired to unit and one set goes to a set of wingnuts on bottom.)
The solid wired set is the input and not the output, has to be above 60% to turn motor. rewired and IT WORKS--long line trolling here i come.--shu
Tried on the lake this morning and on speed #5 pot set below 70% had smoke comming out of unit, let cool off and adjusted higher works ok but not able to adjust to the range i thought possible. anyone using one if so have a lot of questions.--shu
Smoke? Are you sure the maximizer is working? Usually when you let the smoke out, they don't do good. Kinda like emphysema.
Thought that it would be dead but still can adjust from 65% to 100% if i start at 80 or above, don't seem to like the low end of the scale. Started out at 80% and wanted to adjust down to 1mph about 1.2 is when the 'grey stuff' came out by 6 the run switch, shut off and don't seem to change but adjust don't seem right(full knob)--shu
Tried again yesterday, unit only comes on wide open(no control). Still haven't located a set of installation instructions or now i think i need a schematic.---so near but yet so far.--shu
hook a meter to your output leads. adjust variable speed knob. if unit is working correctly you should read voltage all the way through cycle. when smoke came out of unit you may have fried something inside. there is a maximizer on e-bay for sale
motion dynamics carrys a controller that will convert to variable speed. not sure how water proof box would be but if my motor was not variable speed I would try one.
Thanks for the info, have the ebay unit on 'watch' since it's a buy it now i'll probably get to see it disappear. Have found a schottky diode and a
1n4001 that look burned so hope to get this one fixed this afternoon.--shu
When I had a Maximizer, the directions said to hook the trolling motor directly to the Maximizer, put the TM rheostat on High and adjust speed with control on Maximizer. Mine had a coiled cord that would stretch to my seat.
That's what i've got except for the instructions and the clips that go to the battery??? were cut off, can't tell which wires go to the battery and what goes to the motor so must have got it backwards as the 'protection' diode is fried have ordered the schottky diode but still don't know for sure where which wires go.
In some power supplies, the clamping diode is usually across the input to cause a fuse to blow in case of reverse polarity. What size fuse you have from battery? The fuse should have popped and not smoked the clamp diode.
Just checked and don't see a fuse must have been left out when the carpet was redone. What size needs to be there?? All used stuff and no info. --shu
Mine has two terminal. Pos and Neg where the trolling motor connects. The power cable from the battery goes inside the case.
Which wire going inside has the +12v on it the smooth or the one with the ridge? Always thought has ridge has volts. Thanks for the info. None of the wiring diagrams found show what size fuse to use only one shows a 65amp breaker.--shu
Two things to consider when fusing the TM. First the ampacity of the wire and second the stall current of motor. What thrust is the TM? I believe there is a fuse chart on the MK web somewhere.
Trolling motor is a Motorguide 743 which has 43# thrust, wire is 10 guage stranded automotive type.--shu
Yep, the wire going into the case that has the raised strip on it is the positive one.
Thanks, feeling better it's wired right must have got the diode because of lack of a fuse and reversed wiring. will take care of that first thing in the morning. Will replace the diode with a 1n4004 and wait for the schottky diode set and hopefully nothing else was damaged. If it works the knot should leave my stomach and be replaced with some fried fish.--shu
I have a 55# with 30A auto reset circuit breaker on my Jon Boat. It has 10 ga wire. This should work for you. You can get 30A auto resets at the auto stores.
Went to NAPA this morning and asked for an auto reset ckt breaker and got a big HUH so got a manual reset and installed so when parts get here should be good to go long lining. got about 12 small specks this morning, don't know where the real fish got to. Thanks guys for the help--shu
Got parts in and installed, seems to check ok(tyl) but need to 'lake' test. Diode was shorted schottky has both sides open. First 'solid state' repair in years need to go back and work on some tube radios. Time to go fishing.--shu
