sangchris on chopping block?

I do alot of duck hunting at sangchris as well as crappie fishing. We had are end of the year meeting last night and a very intresting subject came up. A fellow hunter was out fishing last week and ran into a site employee, and the subject came up about repair on the west ramp. Well as the conversation went on he imformed my buddy that if DNR doesn't get the budget they request that sangchris might be closed to hunting, fishing, casmping, etc... We are looking into this. Im hoping nothing happens. It would be a huge loss to a bunch of people. What are your thoughts on this? Anybody else heard anything about this?

no word yet, however we do live in Illinois. That, in itself should explain. lol

They shut down a lake over here near me a few years back. Where there is a ramp there will be boats launched whether the state closes it or not. They better tear out concrete ramps before closing or we will launch! Shut it down just makes it public, right? Just sayin..

Many ramps are built with federal money. If they close them down, they have to reimberse the feds. That happened when blago closed down Illini State Park, but that was access to the Illinois River. They had to leave the ramps open, along with an access road. However, they weren't required to maintain the road or the ramp, so you are traveling the road and launching at your own risk.
Sangchris is a privately owned lake, built by a utility company, and is operated under a reciprocal agreement between the Utility and DNR. If that agreement is not renewed or cancelled, I guess the Utility could close the lake if they wanted. With liability concerns, I would expect that closing the lake would be a pretty good possibility. If the ramps were still open, I guess you could launch, but you would be tresspassing, so you could be arrested and your vehicles impounded.
With that being said, when Comm. Ed. owned the lake, even before Conservation had an agreement, they didn't care. If you could get a boat in the water, you were good to go. Of course, liability lawsuits weren't as prevalent in those days as they are today. Who owns the powerhouse now? It would be up to them.

Dominion owns the power plant. My brother in law works there. He was over my house 2 days ago and didn't mention this. He's a fisherman as well as most the guys he works with. I would assume he would have heard something about this. I'll have to ask him.

While I have no insite in regards to this possibility, there is a interesting story from Jeff Lampe posted yesterday at heartland outdoors. It mentions that the DNR is ceasing publication of it's Outdoors Illinois Magizine this year due to their budget being cut in half.. I doubt the magazine will be the only thing cut, and fees will most likely be raised again..

So if they do that would the possiblility of opening up the 25hp limit and open it up to skiing and the like? The hp part would be OK for me, but not the recreational skiers and such. How odd would that be to see a SeaDoo on Sangchris?!

Fear of being sued for injuries makes corporate lawyers cringe. Thus, I'd bet on the opposite-more restriction, if not closure. A couple of years ago, fear of lawsuits resulted in a stretch of the Vermilion River being closed to all use, to the point of hiring security personnel to keep the section closed. I think DNR eventually intervened and took responsiblility for potential injuries, resulting in the stretch of the river being reopened.
