I read in posts that most of you are using Sally Hansens hard as nails for your top coat after painting the eyes. I believe Skip mentioned he was using a clear vinyl on the florescent yellow and chartreuse because the Sallys changed the color. I'm still new at this so this is probably a dumb question. Has anyone used a clear acrylic for your top coat or is it too soft and won't hold up? I top coated a few last night with the clear acrylic andthey look really good today.

Probably won't make a difference if your tying them but With plastics I think you're headed for a mess.
I use a two part epoxy from Component Systems but they have a new one part Epoxy they say is just as good, I'm getting ready to order it.
I have been using seal-coat lure and jig finish by componet systems and have been happy with the results. I just brush all over head and eyes when done with small paint brush.
I still use Hard as Nails.

I use clear vinyl. the seal coat is a little milky and shows up bad on a darker color, tho great on chartruese and white. hard as nails dulls the chartruese paint like skip said, but it has it's place in alot of applications.
I'll agree, the Seal Coat also "separates" or breaks down with time, giving jigheads the appearance of being dusted with cornstarch, which is it's base component.Quote:

That is what I do and why I change for these two colors. I would do them all in Clear Vinyl, but it's a slow dry. Fatman like epoxy and am sure it's great, but again the slow dry and if it's a thick coat you have to use a turning wheel to keep it even. Maybe Fatman has a way that you could just hang them, but I am not in the know enough about the epoxy except when I use it on Popper heads and something else and have to use the very slow turning wheel for what I do with it on flies.Quote:

For any stick on eyes or jigs I paint with testor's paint - I mix equal Parts of A/B and use a brush to apply a light coat. My drying rack is a piece of styrofoam packing material that I stick the hooks into when I'm done, right now I'm looking for a new piece as my wife threw the other one away. After I hang them and while doing more if I see any that I got too much on I use the brush to wipe it off. Been doing this for years and no problems. Yeah it does take a few days to dry but it's worth it, it makes a nice hard finish and stands up to any plastics you would want to use.
Lately been doing a lot of powder painting, and I'm gonna try some double colors and see if I can do it.
Probably so, I've found and I'm sure yourself as well, when you get something that works why change. I use lot's of Sally's myself when I can, pretty affordable and easy to obtain. I just didn't care for the other I mentioned earlier, could just be me. I have some guys that want stick eyes on roundhead jigs, they're a pain to do, but I think I've got a solution. So far it's had excellent results, but I'm looking into sealing them up a little different. It's such a short-cut to be able to read others results here.Quote:

Just that when I go to do some it seems so much easier to have a one bottle cover instead of having to mix - and making sure you don't mix too much where it gets wasted. I know they say you can put it in your fridge for a few days but the wife didn't like that too much LOL

I used some 2 part epoxy years ago called Pettit's hobbypoxy. Wondered if anyone ever tried this and how it went if you did. Used it rod building and it was a thinner consistency than most of what I see today. I'm leaning toward epoxy coating. I tried the Testors for the eyes and sally softens it if I didn't get it covered in the first stroke or two. Mostly the reds. I'm not painting many eyes til I get this worked out. A turning wheel could be made with a rotisserie off of a grill, much cheaper than what I see in the fly catalogs.
Yes agree epoxy it great stuff, but here in my tying room I do so many I would run out of places to hang them. I almost don't have enough places now and heck I have 4 racks in here now, but one is full from my samples I tie to see. I use on for anything I can hang on the final rack after one is tied and done, but I can't imagine taking several days for all of them to dry. I have a problem with me Glow jigs as they have to stay in a separate place for a day or two before I am done with them, but never have so many of them I run out of room.Quote:
