Just logged 140+ BIG walnuts. Thinking about cutting some tops and sinking them. I have never heard of anyone using walnut. Thought? Experiences?

I think walnut tree isn't the best...Something to do with the shells...I could be wrong?...But, it is better than nothing..
I know the hulls are "bad" think I'll go with hickory.
Do you have any access to some birch trees, thats what we always sank when we could find some.
We drop mostly oak...

It is a hardwood, so it ought to work, and last a while.
If you got alot then drop'em. Can't hurt cause the nuts are off by now. I drop green or seasoned cedar,oak,hickory or whatever I can get ahold off.
Drop em in and see what happens.

Black walnuts contain chemicals called "juglins" that, as said above, have been used to stun fish. Although I have plenty of husk dust, I've never tried using it to poison fish since that is illegal where I live and I could explain the difference between an experiment and a crime to a judge. Juglins are found mostly in the husk of the nuts but also in the leaves and roots. There may well be lower amounts in the bark and wood that would probably leach out over time. I suspect that might take a while. You may not get much action the first couple of years but it is probably worth trying.
Walnut branching is very open. Nimrod likes Persimmon because of its open branching, says it will hold larger fish. I use whatever is at hand, preferably water or willow oak but often sweetgum. Caught some big crappie last year from structure I found with depth finder, lake got low, discovered the structure was sweet gum with the leaves still on.
I have heard the walnut husk stories, I think they put the green walnut husks in some sort of bag, like burlap, then kind of pulverize them and drag the bag of them around in the water to stun the fish.
I can't really see the tree tops having the same effects. I would put them out and take some notes. Please let us know if you do and they work good.
