Most are either 25# bouyancy or 35#. The CO2 cylinder is larger on the 35.
After talking to my game warden bud, I won't EVER get a set of those. The guy that drowned at the rez a few weeks back had them on and they never did inflate. He said they've had alot of problems with them not inflating and he was getting a solid life preserver now. He doesn't trust them
I'm gonna say 9G's
Thanks DD! now I got to do more thinking.
Just wanted to put that out there since it came form a game warden.
If u get a set get the ones that also have a manual pull cord. I bought the xps set from bass pro and really like them. They are the auto style with a manual pull cord btw.
If you are only wearing it while running the outboard, why would you want to risk it? Those things aren't cheap either
Personally, I don't look at GWs as the end all be all for advice.........afterall.....they lookin' at hiring Torch ya know...hehehehe
That said, if you really want to go the inflatables and want to be ding dang sure you're getting one that is as good as it gets...look at the Mustang with HIT system. Most utilize a disovable pill that deteriorates quickly when exposed to water. The HIT system works off of water pressure, so if submerged something like 2", it deploys. Course, the HIT is like $250 a pop.
The one I wear is based on the pill. I can tell you it will deploy from water collecting in the bottom of the boat from rain. And has to be re-armed every 2 years for safety at about $25. The Mustang is good for 5 years, but costs about $50 to re-arm.
One big difference is you can't wear mine in the rain, but you can the Mustang.

I'm getting pretty old, I'm top-heavy, I feel clumsy since I got my new knee, and I'm not much of a swimmer, so I wear my Mustang all the time I'm on the water. Pretty cheap insurance if my wife hasn't poked holes in it.
Didn't yours go off that day when you got stranded in the storm?
Yep, sure did. When the rain hit so quick and my motor wouldn't go into gear, I knew better than to leave it on, so I took it off and stuffed it under the console. Just didn't count on the rain being so heavy as to fill the bottom of my boat to 3 inches. :) Boom! LOL. It was the least of my worries at that moment though.

was worried about ya that day bro. Just glad ya did make it
My oldest son bet my youngest son $20 that he wouldn't pull the manual cord on one of mine one time inside the truck. I gave him that "You better not do it look" but I'm guessin I should have said it out loud. He went ahead and pulled it and buddy lemme tell ya something. If ya gonna do this inside the truck, take yo seatbelt off. They ain't no stoppin it when ya pull the cord. My oldest son would have been out $35 dollers if it hadn't been so funny.
Oh yea, one of mine is a sospenders and I ferget what the other one is. But they way mo comfortable to me. I hope I never hafta wear a full sized jacket.
I actually use both versions interchangably during the winter. I wear a full life jacket when I blast off in the morning and when I return at the end of the day but I wear an inflateable belt while fishing.
:fishI was told that the DNR or the CC would not consider inflateable life jackets legal unless the person was wearing the jacket. In other words you could not have it in the storage and be legal. Anyone else hear this?
I am aware of that. But what I was told that they would not be considered as a life jacket if the person was not wearing it. If it was in storage it did not count as a legal life jacket. You have to have a life jacket for everyone in the boat and these would not count if the person was not wearing it. I don't know just what I heard.
Here's an opportunity for Torch to practice being Mr Green Jeans.
VERY INTERESTING

The law states you must have a approved life preserver on board for each person on board....the inflateable does not count as one unless you have it on. So to be legal just be sure you have enough regular ones for everybody on board.....that way you can take your inflatable off if you want to.
Thats what it says in the Mississippi Boating laws booklet.....however I just looked in the rules in the Mississippi Outdoors digest and it reads different. But the local GW told me that the inflateable only counted if you had it on and you still needed a regular life preserver on board for each person if you are not wearing the inflateable.
G is spot on. Must be worn to count as a PFD. "approved" has to do with the coast guard certification vs. Game Warden approved.
I usually keep about 5 in the boat plus my inflatable so I won't have a problem.
For me, it comes down to this....If I didn't have an inflatable, I'd be wearing a regular, but would never leave it on while fishing no matter the weather. With an inflatable, I'm more prone to leave it on in cold temps, but would not wear a regular while fishing.
Ya pays ya money, ya takes your chances.

i actually learned something here
You all do realize you have to do yearly checks on them right? Replace cylinders and check inflation hoses and what not. Replace valves and o- rings and so on. Its all in the care section for the jacket. If you dont do it then yea, they will not inflate when needed, kinda a duh moment.
