First of all, "no I'm not taking up knitting".nonono :biggrin
Is there any draw backs to using knitting yarn? I can get scrap pieces of wool and blended yarn. I have to say that after looking at some it, it looks kind of buggy.

UPDATE: I tied a few up and they look good.
But will they hold up That would be my concern.
I have tied some for other folks upon request and they seem to like them never heard of any coming apart but ive never fished with them but i know they catch fish post some pics of yours im sure they look great
yup it works , and can be used as bubbing as well .
I been using yarn for years, usally lose my jigs before they come apart.
Yarn is used in fly tying a lot and see no reason it should not work! It may get a bit scraggly faster, buy should last plenty long genough
If your worried about it coming apart: use a piece of colored wire and reverse wind it over the body. I use yarn a lot; especially for a underbody to build the body up. Then cover with a couple pieces of saltwater flashabou. Looks great!
And scraggly is kind of what I'm shooting for. Years ago while ice fishing I was using an ice fly and the more scraggly (torn up) it got the more the fish seemed to like it. So what I've done is take the yarn and taken the 3 strands apart and fraid it up a bit, so the fibers look hairy. I'm tying them on the 80th ounce heads. I'll post some pictures up tomorrow.
I use it if I need a color I don't have, the wife has a ton of it. never had problems with it.
I tie a lot of Flys and I use whatever I can get my hands on. It all works. If it comes apart just put it back in the vice and start over. Reverse wrapping with wire is a good idea.
Here's the pictures. I know the quality of the pictures isn't the greatest but hope you get the idea.:highfive

Those look good Tank. I use yarn on some jigs also, it works well.
I tie some pretty cool steelhead and buggy patterns from yarn. Found some a while back that is really thick and loose like a hundred legs per wrap. I think it was Lion Brand but not sure. I have black, purple, and a black with orange, red, green and maybe another color mixed into it. Is by far my favorite for buggy quick patterns without the hassle of dubbing.

That is a few flies I tied with it. 2 wraps is more than enough for a really buggy looking head on a Caddis fly nymph type fly.
