So I guess I need some sort of heat source for Power coating the jig heads. What are you all using and where are recommended places to buy them. I was thinking a place like Harbor Freight.

Lots use heat guns, personally I don't like them and use an alcohol burner. The alcohol is cheap at the hard wear stores and you don't have all that noise. Been doing that 6 years or so.
I agree with Skip on the alcohol burner. The heat guns work well but I don't like the noise. You can get the heat guns at any of the big box stores and most the time you can find the burners on ebay or make your own. Redman uses one he made and if I had seen his before I ordered my burner, well I would have saved a few bucks....
Are you using a wickless alcohol burner or one with a wick. Do you have any problem with any black residue.
I got mine from Lowes $25-$30. Yes, they do make noise and if you're doing 70-100 in a closed space, you start feeling like your not gettting as much oxygen as you need. Tried a candle, didn't like it. I've heard good things about the alcohol burner but have never used one. I've heard you can't see the flame but don't know if that's true or not. Probably is cheaper.
I have been using the same wick for 6 years and still going. Yes see the flame easy. Just learn to count how long for what size head by counting at your won rate so you will do it the same each time.
i use a heat gun its kinda of noisey but it gets the job done
I hate noise unless it is the kind you hear o a calm day in the woods. I think I am going to try the lamp method. Now I have to settle in on the one I want. How long do you normally hold the jig over the flame?
It's kind of hard to find one I like and has the right size wick. I know you can get them for less, but Barlow's has the one I have. I have bought 2 others since and keep going back to this one. Bought a stainless one is how I learned I didn't like the small 1/8" wicks and then one on ebay for cheap, but don't like the cap on it. SO do what you think is best.
what is a alcohol burner i have been useing a hair dryer but it dont work real good been looking for a better way to do it, a heat gun is a little pricey!!!
It's a glass bottle sort of wide at the bottom and a neck with a metal cap with a hole for the wick. Then it has another cap to snuff it and if it's any good it will keep the alcohol for evaporating out. Like I told earlier Barlow's has them and if you look on their site I am sure you can see a picture.
Here is a old post that I did a few months ago. I hate to spend a dime if I don't need to. The post was something like a Redneck Alcohol Lamp.http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/...9/100_2197.jpg
Ok Boys and Girls finally got around to doing pictures of my no cost Alcohol Lamp. Take a 4 oz. pimento jar and punch a small hole in the lid. Take a piece of COTTON Rope 4 inches should be enough stick it in the hole that you punched in the lid. Fill 1/4 full of 91 % medical alcohol wait till the wick gets wet light and start painting. You can pour any unused Alcohol back in the bottle and use it again. So here are the pictures of the no cost Alcohol Lamp. Remember that you can regulate the flame by the length of the wick.

I bought a Wagner dual heat for $22 and for me the noise won't be a problem - I'm deaf in my left ear so I'll just set up to that side and won't hear it. Always wanted one so finally just bought it.
Get your alcohol from the hardware store, Denatured stuff!
Skip I been using the medical 91% stuff from Wally World or the Dollar store. It runs about a buck at the dollar store and a little bit more at WW. Have been buying the big bottles a Sams when they have it. FYI I painted in the neighborhood of 1200 jigs with a pint. Never had a bit of trouble running medical alcohol thur the little burner. I fill it up 1/4 full and go to town painting. So a ounce will paint some where around 80 to 90 jigs. A big saving compared to the Denatured alcohol.

It is cheaper and do not know why the other is recommended when I see it so can't say one way or the other. I would take a wild guess and say there must be some reason, but I do not have the answer. However if it works for you then maybe it's fine, but I would check into why some say don't use it. Maybe I can find out why and get back. Cheaper is for sure better if safety is equal for sure!
Redman you may be okay with the 91%, but I am unsure, but did find out why the denatured is recommended. First it has a higher heat and the rubbing alcohol has water in it and I did find this, but they were talking about the 70% stuff. Based on this I will stick the the denatured stuff as I have been using the came burner for 6 years now and never had to change the wick.
70% isopropyl alcohol works, nut not as well. The extra water forces the flame to expend energy vaporizing water, which is not compensated by energy liberated in combustion. Often the wick will become enriched in water as the alcohol burns away, leaving excess water behind. He net result is that the burner burns feebly and may give up the ghost entirely after a while. I have learned this by sad firsthand experience.

Skip I have tried the 70% stuff and the Prof is right it plays out quick. I would recommend to NEVER use the 70% Alcohol. How ever the 91% stuff is a kin to Moonshine but is a wood base product like Denatured Alcohol. I have never have had any issues with any thing. Have used this for over a year now. The jar was to be thrown away and I had the piece of cotton rope that was laying around so like I said it cost me nothing. If the wick ( rope ) gives out It won't cost me much to replace it. Just a quick walk across the shop.
I really made the first post as a quick fix for someone on another fishing forum that had a Heat Gun go out while working on a big order that had a short deadline. This happened on a Sunday afternoon. This is one of the reasons that I keep using the Redneck Alcohol Lamp.

P.S. If this post seems some what disjointed it because the cat is half laying on the keyboard
Heat gun, no percentages needed. No buying afterwards.
$15
I'm working on jigs, not studying musical notation, the noise would only be noticeable to me if I wasn't coddled and had too much money so that I may think otherwise.
Well we all have different motivations for what we do or we wouldn't be different individuals. For me if the cost of a few buck for alcohol was that important I wouldn't spend more on materials every year than I take in on sales. I have 2 heat guns so it wouldn't cost me anything at all to use them, but I don't like them so I like using the alcohol burner and you like the heat gun so to each his or her own. I don't tie for money, I tie for the enjoyment of tying since I like it so much and just to do a good job is all I care about on this stuff so noise to me is more important than a few bucks. I don't pour my won jig heads either just because I don't want to because it's the tying that I enjoy. If I was doing this to make money I would have quit at least 5 years ago, LOL!:cheers2
I wasn't asking or referring to what you like or dislike. Only replying to you since you quoted me. I was just putting in my two cents like everyone else.
Take care Ship.

I have now idea shy you ever replied as I was just said in other words to each his or her own. I did reply to you post and hope that didn't make you think I was in any way knocking what you said because I was just saying what I like and had nothing to do with you. I never said you were talking about what I like or dislike, but I did and that is all.
Also I am not Ship
Huh?
Nothing, not worth a conversation on the board!
