Corp Closing Campsites
I just don't see how this will help. I can see the savings at Mill Creek where you shut down the entire park but to just close some campsite that are already in place does not make sense to me.:dono
Corps of Engineers' proposal to cut $1.9M annually at campsites - KAIT-Jonesboro, AR-News, weather, sports, classifieds-

Another well thought out plan by the corps of engineers...spend millions of dollars,,in some instances, buy land from individuals by condemning that land..build all the campsites, then close and even close the ramps in some instances.
I am in full agreement with the closing,,just be sure and return said property to previous owners, allow them to run the campgrounds or close them,,their option.
Camping could be a good business without the business practices of the gubberment..
What else you want to know!!! lol

Oh,,they are playing hell with my area....I really don't think they have my best interests at heart.....
-
I found out last night that the corp will be closing off two different boat ramps on the Arkansas River. Both of these ramps are within 20 miles of my house. Its no good.
-
( obama care) at work next they will want to raise taxes do not know if we can take 4 more years. You can't clean your fish at the lake now this parks are being closed that our tax dollars have already paid for.
-
are the closings for year round or just seasonal? if it's year round it will just about kill the jordan boat dock on norfork. the corp is like a coon. what they don't mess up they mess on.
-
Here is somthing for you to thin about. Even thoiugh the Corp. built many of the Lakes in arkansas and operate them, the rain and rivers that fill them up belongs to the people of Arkansas, yet our state gets no revenue from the generation of electricty.
-
I'm with you Creek! If there are 75 campsites there, already built, already with electricity to them, virtually no upkeep, how can closing 15 of them possibly save any money??? Still going to have to have attendants, rangers, etc. to do whatever they do for the other 60 they leave open! And how can closing an already existing boat launch ramp save any money at all??? The cost has already been incurred, for cryin' out loud! banghead Looks to me like they would just be losing revenue from those closed sites, so how can that save any money??
-
There is alot of upkeep I don't agree with the closings but last summer I had a chance to bid on a contract for mowing five of the lock and damns seven camps in total and a diff contract for trash and janitorial type maintenance for the same seven sites the mowing ended up bieng a almost a half a million and the janitorial was around 200 thousand a year these sites are not small guys plus they pay the park rangers /attendants to take ur money at the gate by no means do I agree with the closings after they already bought all this land but the maintenance is not cheap
-
i heard they are going to have public meeting for imput and the way i understand it is they are going to see if any groups might be interest in volunteering for the up keep . I know they are having the meetings not sure about the other part ?
-
I am newbie but live close to greesferry and thank if the corps can not do the upkeep why not let someone lease the area and open it the corps would still make money
-
I think thats what they did at one of the other lakes.
-
-
What a crock!! How much B. S. is that. just leave it to the gov.
-
What I read was the corp was closing some of but not all of the campsites in some parts of greers. On my end they closed all of old hwy. 25 including the ramp. I have to launch at the highway. At damsite they closed some but not all including the ramp. But the marina kept their boat launch open.
-
Anyone have a contact? This is ridiculous
-
I know on Bull Shoals they (Corps) have let Oakland Boat Dock operate part of Ozark Island campground. They even spent close to one million to fix damage to the road cause by high water.
-
I wish someone would tell me how closing a launch ramp that's already built and in use will save a dime? banghead
-
sounds like if we can find out when they are holding there public meetings we need to gather up and go . So if any of you here when and where lets get together and go , i would hate for them to close any ramp . I ran into the head corp guy over the lake and he acted to me as if they were only closing ramps that where next to swimming area ( like the old devils fork ramp where the only thing that divided the two was the orange float . He said that was for liability issues but we need all public ramps to stay open . I thought this was going to effect camping more than anything else , but i have always heard and beleive the squeaky wheel get the grease.

When they built Sweeden Island park on the arkansas river, with 50+ camp spaces and a boat ramp that is dangerous under ideal conditions, they closed a area that had been used for a boat ramp just upstream for at least 50 years, "reeds ferry" for those of you who know the area. It was a much safer ramp to use although it was simply shale, the current didn't hit it nearly as bad as the New ramp. They fenced it off, I assume to ensure that users would buy their user fee ramp at sweeden island. I just reread the link,,the ramp at sweeden island may not be closing, but you'd need a armed guard to protect your vehicle/trailer while fishing. I used to love to camp at Sweeden island, fish the river and hunt squirrels across the road in Gally Flat....we'll see how this goes.
-
Are they just going to let it all grow up. If not they are still going to have to have people mow and maintain it. Sounds like another great gov. plan to save money.
-
thats the plan , no mowing or utilities to fix or plumbing to worry with ,, oh and no people either . If they are that broke charge more for a campsite just don't let it go to waste .

Mill Creek campsites on Greers is closed but it may leave the boat ramp open at a later date. The Corp said that we as home owners in the area would maintain it they would leave the ramp only open. I have mixed feelings about it. I like to launch my bass boat there in the summer when I have the ski boat on the lift.
I don`t like the camp grounds because without any Rangers watching it Mill Creek has turned into a party place ,that is out of control. I`m afraid to launch my boat and I wait until my wife is gone until I drive away in the boat.
I guess they could sell the land for home lots and make a ton of money, that they could waste!!

What pisses me off is having to pay 30.00 a year to use the launch ramp and there is not a trash can to put refuse. They built a Bass fishing weigh in site with 2 ramps and a paved road with a paved parking area. You go down there on Tueday nights after 6.00 pm and see few permits if any hanging in the windows. But will put pink slips on day time crappie fishermen's truck for not having one at the park ramps.
