Getting ready to buy new fish finder for the boat......

Any suggestions. I've been looking for awhile now and have seen some pretty high tech stuff. My question is, does all of this stuff work as advertised. In reading reviews, I've heard the the Down Imaging doesn't work so great and that the GPS doesn't either. Other reviews say that it works great! So I thought I'd ask here instead of taking the reviews at Bass Pro and Cabela's as gospel. Probably looking to spend around 500.00. I do like the idea of having GPS and down imaging features if they are worth the extra money.

Ozark88 if you like Lowrance send Crappie Chatt or Shane a pm they both are Pro-Staff for Lowrance and will be able to answer some of your questions.

If you decide to buy one contact Brian he will save you some $$$$$ I bought a Lowrance Elite DSI and a MinnKota PD 70 I-Pilot and he gave me a great price on both.Try not to buy from Bass Pro or Cabelas I find them to be to pricey.I saved about $250 doing business with Brian.Good Luck!

I like it much better than 2d sonar Brushpiles,trees and other underwater structure is much easier to identify.

Does the DSI have shoot through the hull capability?

I think the HDS5 is still on sale.That's what I hope to get with the down imaging and side structure scan.And all the other bells and whistle's.Chatt and Shane are the expert's on them.

I know this Kansas site is dominated by Lowrance users. I personally like the Hummingbirds. With them you can have a split sonar/DSI screen at the same time. You can't with the Lowrance. I love the DSI it shows incredible detail. When water conditions are right you can see things just like the pictures in the catalogs. Its all about mounting the transducer though. I don't get detail at high speeds, under 5mph and its amazing.

The 5 and 7 will do the same. I only had a image of the 10. I was just showing whats out there. Sorry Ozark88 for not seeing the price point you were looking at.

I've been looking at this one Shane but the reviews for it on Cabelas aren't so hot. What do you think?

Elite-5-DSI-Sonar-with-GPS

I have both the HDS 7 and the Hummingbird 597 di and the Hummingbird blows the HDS away in most catagories. I would sell my HDS if I didn't have so many way pnts in it... I am going to get a second 597 for my boat later this month I think. Just my 2 cents but most of the guys I fish with like the hummingbird or Garmin products over the HDS's.

If you go with a new hummingbird and you want your HDS waypoints, I can get you the link to transfer your HDS points to your hummingbird. They might have the software on Hummingbirds web page also. It's easy to do and you will be able to keep your waypoints.

Ozark- With that it looks like Springhill Duckman might have a good HDS 7 you could buy used!

I use Humminbird, but that does say alot about the Lowrance pro staff.

yeah good staff i have the 7 everytime i hit the wrong buttom call chattman and he helps me out

Thanks for the kind words. I will help if I can. I have owned several different brands over time and I have like many functions they have. At the present time, Lowrance is my choice. This doesn't mean I don't like other types, just don't promote them. I have turned people on to Lowrance and they love it and I also have had people buy them and go back to what they once had. It's in what you like and how you use them. Lowrance is best for me. Everyone is different and they fish different also. Thats what makes us original. Keep warm and I will see you all this spring...

Shane, can the DSI shoot through the hull(on glass)? or do they still have to be mounted externally?

fishlessDan, from what I have learned from the electronics board it sounds like only 2d have a thru hull transtucer.The lss-1 needs to be external.But I'm no expert by far on these.I'm still trying to learn all I can before I buy one.
