I ought to know this but I don't. Can someone tell me the effect of the barometer on crappie fishing? Is the best fishing when it's rising? Falling? Or maybe steady. Or does it make any difference at all. I would appreciate your opinion and experience on this subject. Thanks in advance!

Ski , this might help. IMO if you fish blue bird skies behind a front it takes about 3 days for fish to get lined out. I perfer cloudy or pre front conditions especially shallow waters. The best weather (blue bird skies) is usually the least productive for me.

Ski trip, steady to falling barometric pressure is the best, think about it like this, it's like driving into the mountains, the higher you go the more pressure you feel in your ears, but as you come off of a mountain that pressure reduces. Well The fish feeL these same kinds of pressure from weather systems. Barometric pressure is, the amout of pressure that the atmosphere exerts on objects, high pressure systems exert more pressure, low pressure systems create less pressure, it whould be comparable to a 150 pound man squeezing you around your stomach to represent a low pressure system and a 300 pound body builder squeezing you around the stomach to represent a high pressure system. If the 150 pound guy squeezed you it would be a lot less pressure, if the 300 pound body builder squeezed you it would be increasingly harder to breather, much less eat. This is the easiest way I could think of to explain it.

All my life I've always heard that fishing ahead of a front was the best time to fish, but I guess I never really related that to falling barometric pressure. I've tried to fish when I could when there was a front approaching, and I'm like you Nimrod, I've never done much good for about 3 days following a front. I just never put the two together. I've always preferred fishing on a cloudy day and seem to do better under those conditions. I guess the barometer was falling, or lower than it had been, and that's why. Well, whatdoyaknow!!! :Doh:
I cant wait for the day that iI decide to go fishing by looking at the barometer guage. I have to look at a calander and honey do list.
I agree with Nimrods theory, but it dont make any differnce cuz I am going anyway regardless of barometer. The wind is my decider, thats why I am sitting here typing right now.

Ray, I've always subscribed to the theory that the best time to go fishing is when you can! And the saying that "If man had his priorities in line there would be a shortage of fishing poles"! Rofl I was just wondering why sometimes the fish bite better than other times. :dono

I don't really care what the barometer is doing. If I'm off work, I'm probably going to try to go catch something if the weather is even somewhat decent. I just got a boat a few weeks ago and I am now remembering why I loved fishing so much when I was younger. Barometer can go bother somebody else.
I always have much more confidence and luck fishing with a low pressure, or before a big front comes through, especially during the spring. but also during the spawn the pressure isnt that important. you drop a jig around a bed and theyre going to hit it regardless! most of the time ill stay at house for the first two days following a front, but i think by the third day you can catch fish! if i do decide to go fishing with high pressure, usually i try to find running water somewhere and usually i can still manage a mess!
