A great week on the Black River
I managed to fish 2 full days and 3 half days last week. Every trip was on the Black River in southeast Missouri. We fished two sections of the river and for once the river was clearing, the weather was nice and the fish were biting. In the five days we kept and cleaned: 26 crappie, 19 walleyes, 1 saugeye, 5 flathead catfish, 1 channel cat and 1 nice bass. Probably lost between 15 and 20 one ounce jigs to the logs on bottom. I have fished the river for years but did not know about the crappie fishing there. This looks to be a good winter for fishing and then the March prespawn will get going. Wish I knew how to spell hallejalula.
reply to questions about the Black river
We were fishing the sections of the river above and considerably below Poplar Bluff. The walleye were betweem 11-16 ft deep; the crappie were about the same depths but only in one big eddy hole.
