New to tying ?

I'm wanting to start tying a few jigs.what size thread is needed? what type of thread as far as when it says waxed or not,round or flat?

Most use flat waxed, but anything will get you started and you can build that fire from there. Many jigs have been tied from Mama's sewing box. THe one tool that will get you started with a lot less cussin is a good bobbin to hold the thread. Ceramic inserts in both ends cut way down on friction and break the thread much less than any other. You can spend a ton on them, but I buy some from BPS for around $8 that serve me well. A vise can be improvised from a pair of vise grips. Welcome from middle Tennessee, and welcome to the addiction. You have a lot of fun in front of you. No dumb questions here.

My favorite is 210 Flat Waxed Danville. Some colors I have to use the Danville when not in Flat waxed is Flymaster Plus and it's good too. Next would be 140 and other than Danville for some colors I also like Ultra Thread in 140. I only use 140 if I can't get the color in 210 or if I am tying small jigs like maybe 1/64 or something like that. Other thins I may use it for other reasons and on flies 140 is used, but usually even smaller thread for that. Some go down to 14/0 and even less.

I'm with skip on using the 210 flat wax danville thread. I even use it on smaller jigs like 1/64 and 1/80. I always seem to manage to break anything smaller than that... lol

I have to plead guilty to being heavy handed and breaking the thin stuff, but I still drag it out now and then. I wonder how those guys tie size 20 and don't break that stuff.Gotta be super thin. I was just trying to get the guys first hand tied jig in his hand, after that you just follow the addiction.

I have to agree as Skip got me to try the 210 Denier. But I am a little old school and still have 6 1oz. spools of A. That is a hardy thread and is hard to break. I still have a few spools of D thread. We used those to tie up the Muskie Bucktail Spinners.

All these are good responces, and dont let them scare you off... it will get addicting, Ive found myself tying jigs til 3am several times... But isnt too expensive.. I thought it was till I got into DIY soft plastics, Luckily I got a great deal on a bunch of things second hand from a fellow Crappie.com'er. Be sure to post your first tied jigs! Oh and just got an order in from crazyangler... you will want to deal with them... I was spending over $3 for rayon chenile at BPS, .85c at crazyangler!!!
