Get the NMEA starter kit from LEI.
Canepole has some good advice...Something you may want to consider is calling Justin at 3Rivers Marine. When I set up my etech with nmea 2000 I talked to him over the phone and he pretty much led me through the process. Since then I have added the lgc 4000 and it was a snap to add on to the system. Just make sure you get the correct female terminators (120 ohm). Really not that hard especially after you talk to someone over the phone and they can fill you in on the do's and don'ts.
Let's say a guy buys the network starter kit, and buys a lgc-4000 on ebay that is the puck only, is it safe to assume that he'd be missing an extension that he'll need?
my 4000 came with the...guessing, 18" cable. Can't remember about the kit..seems like I bought an extra power node. Bought the kit from 3Rivers...4000 from BOE.
I bought all my stuff from Lowrance. They told me what I needed. There sre several links to network hoop up.
I bought a start up kit from BBG for my jon boat.
I guess my next question is will there be a significant enough improvement in performance to justify the $250+ for everything.
I'm going to err on the side of Tom on this one. Components on the way.
many moons ago. Youngest is 17 now, so I get my allowance, and most of it goes to computer components, and then the boat. If my boat electronics matched the the level of my computer, I'd have 2 hds 10's 2 lss-1's and 2 lgc-4000's, and a sonic hub.
Tenntom, I bought the 4000 and the starter kit this last summer. The main reason I wanted it was because I was having trouble motoring to a waypoint while watching the GPS. The refresh rate was too slow and I would find myself off to one side or the other. It became a pain in z rear. I spoke with Tom and he was telling me about the speed of the refresh rate using the 4000 on his HDS. I have an HDS 8. I find the external antenna to be extremely helpful when heading towards a waypoint and worth the money just in time saved. I'd say start saving now for it so you'll have it by spring. You best save enough to do something extra special for momma too! Guy can't be buying all these toys for himself and not cover his rear by compensating the wife for his expense.
Oh, and mduncan, Sonic Hub is next on my list. I don't need two units on my rig since I have the Big Boy Tiller Merc that Billbob virtually gave to a poor boy from Oklahoma. I fish from the back of my boat and only need to go towards the bow to deploy TM or while messing with anchors. I've learned over the years that Crappie love Pink Floyd, Dwight Yoakum and R.E.M.
Keep adding stuff Mike and your boat will look like Tom's..RoflRofl

Somehow I think there will be an intervention show at some point, for electronics addiction. LOL
