Does anyone know the how big the georgia & world record crappie was? Was it a black or white crappie?
The Georgia record is 5lbs even cought by Teresa Kemp somewhere around Macon I think in 1984. The world record is 5lbs 3ozs. Thosse are overall, I think the Georgia and World Record were white crappie not sure.
If my memory serves me correctly, she was fishing under a bridge at Lake Sinclair with a cane pole and minnows. That article was featured in a magazine (I forget which one) the same month my big buck was.
I believe the record in Ga. is a black crappie, seems like thats what I read when I caught my 3.2 lb. 18 inches long white crappie at Lake Blackshear in 2010, best I remember it was just over 5 pounds also.
Ragfly jig man that was a nice fish that you caught the other day.
Yes, Ga. State Record is a 5lb white caught in Burns Brick Yard Pond, Macon Ga., caught on a minnow with a cane pole. :o
Yes Tony I think you are correct. I heard that when they made Interstate 16 they got fill dirt and it made this pond. Heck you can hear all kinda stuff and if Ms. Kemp had weighed this crappie right after she cought it it would have been a world record. Either way iffin I had cought this monster I woulda had a heart attack. LOL
Thx for jogging whats left of my memory...I remember it being Burns Brick Yard Pond now.
I met the grandson of the lady that caught the fish at BPS a few years ago when Wally Marshall was here in Macon. The fish was caught in a pond beside I-16. The grandson told Wally that his grandad had caught several crappie bigger than the 5 pounder. They ate them. Wally just started laughing and shaking his head! They sold the five pounder mount but he could not remember who bought it.
I think the lady sold the fish to a local bait and tackle shop but not sure. I got in touch with someone in Macon and they are gonna send me the article that was in the Telegraph. Soon as I get this article I will try to post it here.
sold to tobesofkee bait & tackle, on comubus road up form the macon mail in 84 the store was sold and the fish is some where.
I'm thinking someone told me it's at Trails End Taxidermy, but can't remember for positive.
The crappie was caught in a pond dug to build the interstate 16 between ocmulgee east and the coliseum property owned by the scott family. Property now land locked and posted. The river flooded the lake several times stocking the lake with all species of fish including the white crappie that is still the record. The fish was weighed at mom and pop dyers bait and tackle shop the next day after being caught and the DNR were present to verify species and weight. It was the first white fish i had ever seen looked as big as a football and it was 15 years later that i seen my next white crappie having fished sinclair oconee and jackson all my life i guess there are none in those lakes or has anyone caught any out of these lakes ?
Although this report is hear say it came from someone I consider to be pretty reliable. I was living in Macon at the time Teresa Kemp caught the crappie and a good friend of mine who had a friend who was a bioligist over at Ft. Valley. According to him they did some tests on the crappie and determined it could'nt have come from the pond on I-16 and went back to her and told her they did'nt care other than for their records. According to him she fessed up that they had been sneaking in to the brickyards and that's where the crappie was actualy caught. I know this might not be true but it would'nt suprise me as I use to have access to cheorkee brick yards and I have caught the biggest crappie of my life out of there. Scott
That's what I heard as well Scott, I have seen some huge bass come from there over the years as well.
I love reading about record crappie, I actually meet Mrs Kemp a long time ago she was fishing under the bridge hwy 79 in fishing creek with another lady.
That is pretty cool that you have a good story to go with the state record. Don't mean to hijack the thread, but does anyone know the story of Florida's state record from Talquin? I know next to nothing except that it came from Talquin.
