Something a little different

A good friend of mine who's been tying jigs for a long time taught me his method. Below you will see a few variations of the jigs I've tied with my new gained knowledge. The color schemes are endless. He pours a lot of his own heads, I adapted his tying method to use with over the counter jig heads that are designed with the required long barbed collar. The heads have Gamakatsu hooks and are 1/16. The skirt material is silicone. and the wings are made from vinyl.

those are really nice. Is there a source for the vinyl? I would like to tie a few. they really pop with color. thanks for sharing with us too.

The sources we use the most often and with the best variety of colors are pool floats and cheap rain gear.

Great idea, truly outside the box thinking developed those. Good colors, and it's clear the fish like em too.

Great looking jigs dabber. The colors you used look good together and are good crappie colors. Nice tying and thanks for sharing.

Really cool! It's supposed to rain for several days, so now I'll have something to do. Got a few old skirt in a box and I'm i'll find some vinyl somewhere. They look great!

They're tied similar to tying a larger bass jig using the same silicone skirt material. The wings are more complicated as they need to be a specific design to achieve the proper wrap effect. A barbed or collared head is needed to hold the material and wing in place. You start by tying a length of the skirt material from front to back. The wing is placed, wrapped and glued. The string is cut and the wing is folded over to conceal the wrapping.

Wish that you would do a photo tutorial on this one as it looks winner, winner Chicken dinner. Would like to tie a bunch in the smaller sizes for gills and bream. Know that they would be killer on crappie he also.

I had to give it a try this morning. I had some of the plastic floaties in the pool shed. I found there was enough unused vinyl material on the edges for a trial run. I'll have to adjust the end of my pattern to a flowing wave to get a better winged look, but it's no big deal. I used flank feather for my first. I realized I should of tied the plastic first, then the feather over the plastic. That way, when you fold the outer section over the top, it covers everything including the feathers around the neck like a taco pocket. For my first, it looks "BUGGIE" to me.

They all look great. I havent had a chance to use any of 'em yet but plan to soon. Those top two colors should do great in stained waters.Thumbs Up

That one on top has been my go to bait at Santee over the last couple of months. It's surprisingly effective in clear water also. Especially in the tanic waters I fish most often. The orange and chartreuse is very good on white crappie.

WOW!!---those are a brand new look in tying jigs. Love the photo that proves they are already proven-your jig tied by you-in a crappie's mouth-it dont get no better.

I found that a quick blast with a heat gun will relax the vinyl into the shape you want. Be careful not to overheat them, if you do the vinyl will shrink or tear. (from experience...lol)

The color schemes are endless as are the weights and color of the heads. We've experimented with nearly every combo imaginable. Folks may not believe this, but 10's of thousands of crappie have been caught using variations of these jigs throughout the last 30 years or so. If you want to see just what we caught this past year, check out the threads I started in the South Carolina forum. And those are only from this one year when I had my camera present and had place like this (CDC) to share with others.

Inkdabber, tied a few in 1/8 oz to try next week. Going to see how the chenille body does with the rubber tail. I can't wait to see how the crappie like these jigs. Here is a couple ready for next week. Thanks for the great idea :).

been using rubber in a lot of my jigs for a long time but i add flash to them I think that is a very cool idea inkdabber love thinking outside of the box u never know whats laying around can ispire you to create something different kewl ties i like em
