Consider getting something small like a riding mower battery. It will keep all of your finder options open but won't take too much space or weigh as much as a full size TM battery. You can even go smaller with a 7ah rechargeable battery commonly used in power back-up units. A low-cost charger would give you all you need to maintain this small battery. I used one of these for quite a while before I got a HB 1197. That thing eats batteries like they're going out of style!
I was lookin at a higher end pirana max from hummingbird anyone ever used one are they worth a dam
bought a hummingbird 150 at Academy Sports for like $80. Works great on my jon boat. shows depth, water temp, and marks fish and bottom contour.
So I've decided on that or a lowrance m68c the one with the gps I really don't wanna spend that much and don't need the gps but I've heard lowrance is better than humminbird but I guess that's the ford chevy argument that will never end what would u guys do for a 14 ft Jon with a 6 hp Johnson and 30 lb troll motor is it worth it to spend more on electronics than I did on the boat
Bobberstoper that 150 runs off a rechargeable batt and not a 12v right and how and where does the xducer mount
Rakoprtr,
The (PiranhaMax) 150 is a portable unit and runs on a 12 volt rechargeable battery. Its one of those 7ah batteries that Corker mentioned. Any 12 volt battery will work to power the PMax 150 or any of the PMax units (or most sonar units on the market today).
Since the PMax 150 is a portable unit the transducer is a portable mount as well meaning that it uses a suction cup to mount to the boat. You can buy hardware that will allow permanent mounting to the boat if you want to.
There are other PiranhaMax models to choose from as well as the 300 series units that may be within your price range.
Thx much y'all been alot of help
I bought an HB PiranhnaMax 160 Portable (very cool, has a weatherproof carrying case, rechargable battery, base plate, etc) for about $120 on Amazon.com. It does everything I need it to: depth, temp, marks fish of different sizes and is pretty good at showing structure. The 160 version (compared to the 150) is dual beam so it reads a 20-degree cone and a 40-60?-degree cone. Fish marked by the 40-60? cone show up "outlined" on the display (rather than solid) so you know they are more off to the sides of the boat rather than directly underneath. I charged the battery in May, used it 16 hours a week and didn't charge it again until Nov (and even then it only charged for about 30 minutes before reading full charge!)
I fish from a jon boat too. It's kind of a community boat so I need gear that's quick/easy to rig and un-rig. Fits the bill perfectly.

The transducer mounts on the transom. I use the suction cup option so I can pull it off at the end of the day (easier said than done -- you could tow the boat by the suction cup).
There is a HB 565 in the classifieds section that is a solid performing finder. Rugged and reliable.
Ya I seen that and the garmin 300
I was really ready to buy the garmin 300 and another batt but now that I heard all the good things about the piraņa max series I'm leanin towards one of them with the dual beam
I wish they had a color one like the 190 that was portable I think I'm finally gonna break down and buy one and once I do it's gonna take me a month to learn how to use it ( this is my first time hehe poplin my ff cherry what if my dad finds out omg I gotta be home by 8:30
And not to mention I have no idea at all how to read one
Stow Away make a small deep cycle battery that it is the same size as a lawnmower battery.
What's the diff it the pirana 160 and hummingbird 570 portable is it worth the extra money
570 has a bigger screen...shoots a little deeper...more levels of "grayscale"...more p2p watts...
The 570 bigger screen would be the biggest advantage to the average fisherman...

Go to web site and you can see it and others....
So I tink I finally decided I'm gonna get the 570 but here's my question lookin at videos and pics of people's sonar screen let's say ur using a dual beem like on the 570 I understand the fish icons are diff depending on the beam but let's say it's showing a stump at 30 ft how do u know which side it is on or where it is in relation to ur boat
Sorry bout al the questions but I'm way new at this and I am pretty sure I'm gonna learn most of it at our Arkansas crappie cAmp but would like a general knowledge before then so I don't look like a douche on the water
This is the Dual Beam that comes with the 570 portable...
It is only possible to know that any echos are in the sonar cone... Somewhere
If the echo shows in the 200khz beam... That echo is most likely directly under the xducer...

I understand that but I was wonderin if there's a way to tell let's say it shows up in the 83khz beam is there a way to tell where it's at in that beam Ie left or rightside of the boat
There is no such thing as a fishfinder. Fishfinder is a pseudo-synonym for sonar.
Ok well I did some comparing side scan Is out of the question and one of our member is gonna sell me his garmin 400c in the classifieds same sonar type but has the color screen which I like so I guess il see if I can figure this technology thing out lol thank u guys so much u really are the most knowledgable and helpful group of people I've talked to in a long time crappie.com rules because of it's members
