I am new to pouring and have been told to be careful breathing fumes, what do you guys use? I will be pouring outdoors as the weather is great down here. Also how should I clean up?

If You are outdoors, You are fine. as long as there is a prevalent wind just stay upwind. If there is no wind, do not get directly over the pot as this is where the fumes will be. I pour jigs in my shop which has an open end right where I pour. The ceiling is 30 feet high and it is like I'm pouring outdoors. Pretty safe environment for it. Just don't b standing right over the pot in close quarters. You will get a bad dose of fumes.CF
I have a small room in the back of my shop that I pour in and it has a sliding glass window. I have a regular box fan that I face blowing out so that it suck fresh air through the door. I have been told you want the air flow to be strong enough to move candle smoke after you blow the candle out. My friend installed an exhaust fan out of a kitchen that was in a trailer, right behind his pot.
Agreed, I spoke with the people at Do It Mold Corp who told me they keep lead pots going inside their building all the time. I would make sure not to eat or drink anything while melting lead and to be sure to wash your clothes separately when you are done. Be sure to wash all over and I would recommend keeping your fingernails cut close and scrub under them.
Always wear a mask if you file or drill into metal as lead dust can be breathed in. Go to Do It Molds website for more safety tips for working with lead
Thanks guys! I didn't think it was to big a deal, can not be any worse than other things I breathe. I am a firefighter and seem to find smoke.
as said proper ventilation and a little common sense and you will be fine
Hard to believe lead is so bad! John Wayne used to take a piece in his shoulder in every movie.

You know if you think about it, lead has killed a lot of people. John Wayne killed bunches of Indians an bad guys. Real pioneers, mountain men and gunfighters used a lot of lead also. Most people that have died from lead did not breathe it in, but it could happen. That being said, why take the risk when you know about it. Have lots of fun, but be careful.
It's suspected that long term exposure effects your brain. I've been pouring for 50 odd years. I guess that is what's wrong with my brain. Merry Christmas, every one.
