What does "Save 4.d" mean...??
Rickie
Bob, the economy isn't that bad "YET".....That can of coffee comes with an old Navy sock as a filter..Rofl
Wonder if the can is pre WW 2?
Looks to me like it might originally have been from Great Britain. They use the "d" for pence all over the Commonwealth, too. My best guess is that it wasn't printed for an American market.
remember the S&H green stamps but not the coffee and i am 66
looks yummy. pour me a cup please.
it goes fast get up early
I would love to know how old it is.
Hawk,
It would be between 1945 when "Maxwell House Instant Coffee" as a brand name was introduced for sale and 1971 when the UK phased out the "d" for penny. The picture is from the UK with a bit more of the story at:
Old Maxwell House Instant Coffee Tin
According to Wikipedia Maxwell house started selling granulated coffee in the UK in 1969, which seems to narrow the time period to between 1969 and 1971. That close enough? I can't do much better than that without some sort of batch stamp from the can, which it may not have even had at that point, and the translation index to convert it. That is the best guess I have anyway.
BTW this brand was a direct successor to the instant coffee General Foods began selling to the US military in 1942.
