I do a little tying, but I do a lot more duck hunting. I know that the flank feathers on a drake woody are highly regarded, but what else? I just started looking at various flanks on other birds and both the drake and hen mallard have a nice pattern. I'm more interested in the breasts, but surely some of the feathers would make someone happy.
Don't know much about em but have decided to get my feet wet next season for the eatings Feathers will just be a plus.
Mallard, Gadwall, Teal all have very nice flank feathers. I buy all of these at one time or another. I use to duck hunt a lot and was even a guide at one time over West of Houston. I started duck hunting with my dad in 1953 when I was only 5 years old, but finally gave it up due to health in 1989 when I had my really big and bad back surgery. I actually thought I would never even be able to fish again for about 4 years, but finally in 1993 I decided to give fishing a try and been back at that ever since an shave fished my whole life other than that 4 years. I still am too bad to be able to duck hunt with all the work that goes into that or Goose hunting which I use to also love.
I think I replied to your last post, but never heard from you so I say again I would love to get some if you have any left or get more. I tie flies as well as jigs and a lot more of uses for them on flies than jigs actually.

Yeah us fly tyers like those Lemon wood duck flank feathers, flank feathers with black and white bars at the tips are highly used also. Properly cleaned and prepared sets of wings, the matching feathers on each wing can be used for wet fly wings. I'm with Skip - If you get lots I'd love to get some.
I use the darker gadwall and teal flank feathers for the top of the jig and the lighter mallard and wood ducks for the belly of the jig. A lot more fly patterns use duck feathers compared to jig patterns and that's because whether you are tying a fly or jig they work. I need to look at more duck pictures to see what else could be added to the list. If I could only have one type of duck feather it would be the mallard drake. It takes dyes really well.
Junglejim is the man when it comes to Flash Ducks. They are easy to tie and is a great fish getters. Have to agree that I sure do like the Gadwalls for tying them. I use Mallard flanks that I get from Crazy Angler for the colored feathers. Bad part is I have to trade for the Gadwalls as we don't have that many around here. Lots of woodies. This lake I am on is considered the Wood Duck Capital of Texas.

I have a place to buy Gadwall Redman and if you decide you want some I can order them for you on my next order or a later one if it's better. I think that soon I will get some more of them as well as try some bronze mallard flank and I also want some tungsten eyes.Quote:

Hey Fillet..put me on your list , lol. Broke down and just ordered me a new vice for xmas. Definately what theses guys said already...the striped feathers you find on the flanks...of woodies, mallards, and gadwalls...I think are offered most often in the catalogs.

I found a use for just about all species. I'm in the duck hunting industry so I have really good access most of the time. Pintail, Widgeon and even Drake Spoonbill have some nice feathers I use them for some of my saltwater flies making mullet imitations. Gadwall is my number one for crappie. I think the flank is killer, but I use the brown feathers between the shoulder blades for a cricket bug looking jig as well and a crawfish imitation. During normal years I am fortunate to get more feathers than I know what to do with. This year the drought has changed our marsh and it's been tough. I'm sure I'll get enough though. Pearl Flashabou under a set of flanks=Crappie in the box!
