Longlining

Well I'm ashame to say I've never longlined before...but I'm gonna try it in about a week. I don't have a variable speed trolling motor, but I have a small hand control trolling that I put on the transom, and have a switch I use to sneak up on brim beds that may work?
I think the speeds are slow enough, without having to us the big trolling motor. I have a trolling plate [ Happy Troller] I just got for the gas motor, but rather try the 12v trolling motor first.
I have a couple questions for you Ga. longliner pro's...The lake I'll be fishing is a deep lake, 50-60 feet in a lot of area's, and you can see about 6 to 8 feet below surface.
What size jigs should I be pulling, and how many poles should I startout with being I've never done this before.
I have 7, 12 ft. b&m trollers, and 1, 7 ft. med.spinning rod, and 1, ultra lite 5 or 5 1/2 ft. rod. I've sold all my other poles and rods, would these poles and rods work?
I have always spider rigged, or single pole fished, and I have lots of southern pro jigs, all colors.
Also is it anytime of year, or temperature that longlining is not good?
I know this is a lot of questions, but I would apperciate any help I could get on longlining.

Wish more folks posted on here more often. Several folks on here better than me at pulln jigs but I will tell what I think.
Not sure about how u are set up, but with 7 12' a few other shorter rods and a transom mount trolling motor, I would be pulling off the back sides and transom. Shorter rods closer to the big motor. Should give u a better spread. Also starting out I would probably start with 4 poles and add some as u get more comfortable. Sthn Pro is a good grub to pull. Use assorted color 1/16 heads (lightwire heads would probably help with some headaches on the learning curve). Use a loop knot and tie single heads to start with (add small split shot later for depth). Cast out 30 or so yards & start watching depth finder to see what depth the schools of fish are habging at. Long line is tough if trying to get below 20'. GPS is needed if u are gonna be consistent with speed & depth. Without it u r pretty much just riding around. Clear & deep lakes are tough any way u fish them but I would go small & bright shiny colors. Lots of variables make it hard to tell u exactly what to try. Lot of trial and error. Hope this gets u started. Maybe so others will post some more tips.

Everybody longlines little different. I use 8 rods from the front of the boat. (Auto-Pilot and GPS for speed). My front polees have heavy lead and fish almost straight down. My Long poles have double rigs tied with loop (Litewirehooks only). My shorter poles have single jigs with either one ot two #7 pieces of lead approx 12-18 inches above the jig. Try to troll approx .9 to 1.3 MPH and make the fish chase the jigs......P.S. You can't outrun them. I always try to troll over the ledges of channel or over humps or trash piles. 400 waypoints on GPS gives indication of where to troll......Cooler weather the fish are deeper. Hope this helps a little.....

I never longline the deep water. I pull jigs in water 20' or shallower. I also never pull in clear water either so I probably wont be much help to ya. I fish stained water. I target a speed of .9 mph, sometimes a little slower and sometimes a little faster. All depends on the bite and how the fish want it. I usually fish a 1/16th jig with or without a splitshot, depending on what the graph shows (where the bait and fish are holding) and how deep I want the jigs to run. You can fish with your trolling motor but it would be good if you had a portable GPS so you knew what speed you were running. Just to let you know, I've been catching fish in 7' to 14' of water for the past few weeks now running my jigs within a couple feet from the bottom.

Man I sure like that boat. Wish I could find one like it for sale at a good price.

multi. units are nice till you pickup a nice cat or a nice bass then you are cutting lines, I only use 6 rods. 2 up front with a 1/2 or 3/4 oz wt. 2 out the side (back) and 2 out the back. All double rigs, with 1/8, 1/16 or 1/32 oz. jig head with a different color plastic tube. The four out back are at different distants, i try to keep them 30' to 50' range.. I use an auto-pilot at speed range .7 to 1.0 MPH. The fish will let you know what they want. If you get lucky the 4 out the back will be a hand full. HOPE YOU THE BEST OF LUCK!!

Can't add much to what's been posted. I do think you need a way to measure speed. I long-line at .8-1.3 mph. 1/16th-ounce heads and split shot the size needed to control depth. Depth will be determined by speed, amount of line out, jig(or jigs) weight, and added weight. I use varying length rods because I run my rods from either side of the front of my boat. I pull 10-12 rods. I usually run a mix of single and double-jig rigs. Long-lining is by far the preferred method for me to spend a day fishing for crappie. When the fish are biting, you can put a LOT of fish in the boat in a hurry. Like GA BOWMAN said, pulling water deeper than 20 feet, or pulling in clear water don't usually put a lot of fish in my boat.

I like to run my lines a foot shorter than the water depth when I'm trying to find fish that bite, I'll put the rods out and hit the trolling motor and pull jigs up near the top and turn t/motor off and count them down a ways and then go again noting where the fish hit.

I longline with only 2 rods (lazy) and pretty sure I don't want to deal with the tangles that could result from using as many rods as some do but just my preference. The more rods you have out, the more tangles GL

Come to Talquin and I will show you what I know. Its not much, but do catch one from time to time.

From reading the Ga. forum in the past I knew that you Ga. boys are pro's at pulling jigs.
My hat is off to yall, Yall know your stuff, and that's why I read here.
Like I said before, I've been spider rigging for a 100 years, but when the lake is ruff with wind and waves spider rigging is hard, but I think I'd be able to keep my lines in the water longlining out the back of the boat from what I've read?
