Hey Snake, or Keith
Will you post here or just send me a pm on how to make resin grub molds? I seem to have read somewhere that you could use car bondo?
Keep it simple enough for a six cavity hand pour mold. Thanks.

you can use dondo we have used it for bedding and rifles to make them more accurate I don't know how that stuff will hold up under heat I would imagine that it should do very well because you are put it is car body Fielder and it would take a lot of heat from the sun outside beside the mental so I would give it a shot to see what happens the stuff that I've used is a two component compound you want to work fairly fast it sets up pretty fast but not too fast depending on which hardener you put in it if you're needing plastic baits or something to put into it to make the cavities please let me know we will gladly send you any plastic baits that you want I'm sure Mike that you will have a ball doing it there are so many different things that you can make you may want to ask crappie seeker he has worked with this stuff and made molds maybe not the same material but he has worked with different stuff I know he's not on here a lot so you may want to shoot him A PM but I'm pretty sure that he will see this post.
bob.
Ok Bob. Thank you. I will send him a pm.
Mike....why don't you ask Santa for a injection mold and a injector this year ? I am sure she will understand if you ask her right.
well in the short answer no. its not bondo, its their product. bondo fiberglass resin that you would need to use.
walmart or home depot stuff will do just fine. pretty much the same stuff as the open pour molds you just got.
I smell a natural progression here to injection molds. Won't be much longer. I know, I did the same thing.CF
Cant help You on the resin there Ship. I started thinking of that and then I just looked at where I was headed and just bit the bullet and went injection. Now When I sit in my living room, I can here my plastics, molds, injector calling my name from the mancave. It is like dope, and I have to make more baits!RoflCF
Thanks CF. I guess I am intimidated by "Injection" I still don't like shots at the doctor's office either! LOL
May have to look into that after the first of the year. Can't find too much on you tube either on making resin molds. will try Dogpile Web Search this afternoon. I used that site a lot as a building principal. Best search engine on the net folks.
Just found this on e-how.com.

1
Place the rectangular baking pan on a flat and level surface. Line the bottom of the pan with a sheet of laminating paper gloss side down and adhesive side up. Use tape along the edges to fasten it into position in the pan.
2
Position a selection of worm lures onto the laminate sheet, allowing a small gap in between each one. Make sure that each worm sticks to the laminate adhesive so that it will not move out of position when you pour in the fiberglass resin.
3
Fill a Pyrex jug with a 10-cup mixture of fiberglass resin and activator according to the manufacturer's instructions. Use a stir stick and mix the solution to amalgamate the activator into the resin.
4
Pour the fiberglass resin solution over the worms evenly so that you cover the lures by 1 inch. Allow at least two hours for the mold to set or follow the fiberglass resin manufacturer's drying time instructions.
5
Turn the pan upside down onto a flat surface to release the mold from the pan. Remove the laminate lining from the top of the mold and lift out the worm lures if the mold did not release them when you turned over the pan. Repeat the procedure to create multiple fiberglass resin worm molds.

Time to get to work Ship.......what are you waiting on dadgummit?
Sheeskalambooskalabobbyprizeandamenandallthatstuff . Just got back from Wally World with the stuff. Have to help the wife cook and clean so we can celebrate Thanksgiving tomorrow. Will make some molds on Friday and pour on Monday. Saturday I have to prepare Sunday School and sermons to finish.
We will get it done soon David.
tighten up when you get a chance Ship
I am so tired right now. Old man's gotta rest.
looking forward to seeing what you come up with ship might have to get some of that stuff and mess with it myself.
please post pics, sorry i could not help you more, the small baits are a little bit difficult but can be done. Like I said though, I graduated from it and have not looked back. Good Luck with it
I am still taking plastics 101 from the school of playing around. I have cut a few classes but will do extra work on Friday after all the honey do projects. G and Bob are taskmasters but I will survive. Will take an injection mold class next. Anyone who wants to teach it can pm me. LOL.
Pictures will show up by Tuesday due to Auburn vs Alabama and Cleveland vs Cincinnati this weekend. Then there is Ohio State vs Michigan and the stuffed turkey and sweet potato pie thing too. Hmmmmmm. I'll get to it soon next week sometime. Might even try hackle in the plastic too.
Mike....You could probably make baits and catch fish too if you weren't so concerned about the football and sweet potatoe pie....just sayin......also honey do's can always be done later don't ya know. lmaoRofl
If you have the time, look back through some of the old posts here on the board and you might can find some posts about it. There use to be some good pictures at one time of resin type molds that looked pretty good. I am right with you on the Bama Auburn game, also gotta catch LSU and Arky
That is the great thing about injection. You don't have to have as much skill. All the things You have to be careful about when pouring become obsolete when injecting. The molds handle the details but there are little tips that You can learn and we will all help You and get You on a much faster learning curve.CF
Well I completely screwed up two resin molds. Wasted an entire can of the stuff. The baits floated up through the stuff. What happened?
You might try doing it by pouring the mold form with the resin and hardner mixture and then pushing the baits down it it from the top .....and you might take a piece of wood spray some PAM on it for a release and weight the baits down with it. I don't know anything about it....just thinking and guessing here. I do think the whole process will be easier with a injection mold and a hand injector.
Just a suggestion: put in the resin in layers, the first just enough to cover the model, to anchor it, and then add more as the first starts to set. Once the base layer has started to kick off, the model should be held in place. The mix has to be in small batches of course. More messing around and time consuming this way, but it should answer your problem. The layers of resin should bond to each without any problem.
That makes sense................thank you
This is kinda sorta what I tried.
Fiberglass Resin Mold
Updated November 26, 2011
Supplies
1) Bondo Fiberglass Resin (Buy at Wal-Mart or an auto parts store)
2) liquid Hardener
3) Permatex Gasket maker
4) Metal pan from the thrift store
5) Pyrex measuring cup
Technique
a) Place the worm in the pan and then cover it with water so you will know how much resin to use. This prevents waste. Pour the water into the measuring cup to measure it. This is how much Bondo fiberglass resin to use...
b) Put a small strip pf gasket maker on one side of plastic baits. Glue the lures on the bottom of the pan.
c) Mix the fiberglass resin and the hardener in an old pan. Mix hardener and resin according to directions on the can. Usually this is about. ¼ tsp hardener for every 6 tsp of resin
d) Pour resin mixture into the pan. Start on the side of the pan and just let it float over the grubs and worms.
e) As the resin cools it will shrink away from the sides. Let it harden about 20 hours on a flat surface while in the pan.
f) Remove your mold from the pan. Take the worms and grubs out of the cavity.
Melting Worms
1) Use a Pyrex measuring cup and an old microwave. Do not use the one in the kitchen. Go to the thrift store and get one you can use in the garage.
2) Wear safety equipment. Long sleeves, face shield or goggles and gloves. NEVER USE water around hot plastics. It causes an immediate reaction THAT WILL CAUSE SEVERE BURNS!
3) Cut up the same color worms in the Pyrex measuring cup. Place the Pyrex cup in the microwave on the high setting.
4) Check the cup about every 30 seconds. Use welding gloves to handle the cup as it gets very hot. You can stir the mixture with an aluminum stir stick. Melt it until it is like hot liquid syrup.
5) Spray Pam on the mold cavities or use a small brush to brush the cavity with vegetable oil. This prevents the worm from sticking after you pour it.
6) Pour the liquid hot plastic into the molds. Let them set for about five minutes then remove your bait and put them in a pan of cool water to complete the process and cool off.
7) When they are cool you can use a fine pair of scissors to trim the excess overflow from the lure.
If this keeps up, I may have to scrap this and learn about injection. I am on my third can of resin at about $11.50 a can. As I said, I am pretty bad at this so far.
ok Bob and G. You convinced my with this video. I am done trying to make a resin mold. That looks like one heck of a lot easier than what I am trying to do. Got to find me one on a 2 inch minnow, one for waxies and one for icicles and one for red wigglers. Shoot me a pm on where to look and what do I need as far as that injector.Let me know if you know of anyone that has used molds and injectors like that. I will purchase a few at a fair price. I can probably do that injection thing. All I saw before was kinda upside down injection and I was afraid I'd burn my fool self pretty dadgum bad if I tried that without knowing a hill of beans. Thanks for posting the video Injection Molding.wmv - YouTube
