Now that we have a good thread of people posting pix of HB SI vs Lowrance SI... I think it would also be interesting to have a thread where we can compare the Humminbird HD DI (with dedicated DI crystals) verses the Lowrance Structure Scan DI...
Now my 1197 does not have the dedicated DI crystals so you guys post your pix here so everyone can compare for themselves "real on the water DI images"....

i post some pictures later today using my 597hd/di.it will give me a reason to use the di today, ive got were i dont use the the di any more. for me and the kind od fishing that i do i just dont see any use for it,but youve given me a reason to use it again (pictures)
So the comparison is going to be HDS with LSS-1 VS. HB DI only units? Seems like you’d compare the flagship Vs. flagship?

Duncan...unfortunately the HB flagships (1198, 1197, 998, 997, 898, 798, 797 -All SI units) do not have dedicated DI crystals..but are merely computer generated images from the SI data....:(Quote:

DI technology seems to be very important to some people in their preferred method of fishing.... so actual image clarity of "dedicated cystal unit" vs "dedicated crystal unit" may help some people decide which unit would work best for them....

Humminbird is rolling dedicated DI into all of the larger screen units for 2012 (11xx, 9xx, 8xx). In fact, the 1158c DI won the "best of show" award in the electronics category at ICAST 2011.
I'm in line for an 1158c DI to replace the 858c I currently run on the bow, and will be happy to contribute screen captures as soon as it arrives.
Jason, do you know if you'll be able to retrofit older models...ie 1197 .... with upgraded transducer /software to use dedicated di crystal ? Not saying I would, but just wondering.

I haven't tried any other colors yet. That pic is probably the best that I have. I use DI almost 100% of the time, but honestly, I fish a lot more then I snap pics.

Here is a fact. Bait fish can look like a brush pile on 2d and is often marked as a brush pile. DI will show ground separation between fish and bottom in most cases. I run DI/2d split screen to identify this so not to mark bait fish as structure. I also run DI overlay to enhance the 2d image.
I have 2 HDS units up front. Both are run in split screen. One is DI/2d and the other is SI/GPS.
I like this capability. Do I catch more fish? I don't know but I am looking hard at it.

And this is the very reason for starting this thread... To create a topic of discussion with "real on the water comparisons" of image quality in the DI technology to help people make conscious decisions on what will work the best for themselves....
After all.. Everyone's ideas of advantage vs limitation is different... Pictures may make the decision easier for some folks...
I may own a HB but I would never tout HB over Lowrance (nor vice versa)...opinions are biased...
People want to know what will work best for them.... Show 'em the pix and let them decide for themselves...

ok, heres what i do. i use side scan to locate were i want to fish, find structure,hard spots,humps, points, fish. i mark the spots with gps change to screen that shows navigation/sonar. i dont use the go to or anything i just steer towards the waypiont zooming in as i get closer until i see the spot that i have marked show on the sonar screen then drop marker maybe doing this in more than one spot so things will have time to settle down before returning to cast jigs.before leaving ill mark the location with my garman handheld so the next time i return ill use the trolling motor for a quieter return. also before leaving ill take a snapshot off the location using di.Quote:

Sounds like a waste of money to buy a DI unit, and an SI unit, especially if you find DI useless. I can't imagine not using the DI, especially for tournament fisherman. Going over a spot with 2d would give you little to no information, going over anything with DI will show you without a doubt what you are seeing. There could be cedars that are sunk, man made structure, etc. but you'd never know it with 2D sonar.

Where are transducers for these units both upfront, don't you get interference with the two transducers shooting out similar/same signals? I don't know just asking-thanks Jax Oh yes I like the way you have your two units screens set, I have been thinking of putting in a second unit to show GPS (cheapo than HDS) but now you got me dreaming..........................
yes i see what your saying. ill show you a picture and you can tell me how the two views differ and how you would fish differently after seeing the two. now bear in mind im not a tournament fisherman and i dont believe that the majority of people that view this thread are either .just common people wanting to catch more fish. now i have the units because i do like fishing but i like experimenting with this new technology to and i get to exchange ideals with good people like you and others.and that brings up another thing can i no your name mines robert. also keep in mind that im using the humminbird 597hd/di. this is a low cost unit and a pritty small viewing screen to that im experimenting with compared to others that these pictures are being compared to.i also want to say that the only experence that i have with lowrance di is only what i see you and others that post here.Quote:

great pictures justinp61. thanks for sharing your pictures. i want to bring up to things. in the picture that i posted above you can see to bait balls. just like cane pole was talking about in and erler post .you can see how the bait ball looks on the traditional. 2d and on the di. the second thing that i want to point out is in the picture above that cane pole posted, notice that he talks about his jig being seen on the (di outside of the 2d coverage area ).there is a difference in the coverage area between the to . great pictures. in a few more that i shot with my 597hd/di these are all structure on kentucky lake that i catch crappie on and if you find them you will to

not sure were your saying that ones out if the water the pictures that i have were near winter pool. the culvert your talking about must be something else that i dont no about. i learn something every day here on crappie .com thanks
There may be three then. The last time I was in there, about a month ago you could see the curbs sticking out of the water. It's on the other side of the bay from the bridge.
The new 1158c DI, 958c DI, and 858c DI systems.... Do they have just a DI crystal and 2D sonar? If so, could you upgrade an existing 1198 with a splitter cable so that you could now have a dedicated DI crystal on the 1198 unit?
Has anyone seen any snapshots of the 1158, 958, or 858 units to see if the DI is better?
