Hartmann: Has #OWS "blown up" the Republican Santa Claus theory?
We the people CAN make a difference.

Two points:
(1) It wasn't easy, but I made it through that video. The whole thing was laughable, but I actually agreed with one point the guy made: that "changing the narrative" is important. That's exactly what the OWS movement is all about. They want to take the focus off Obama's failed economic policies and put them on "Wall Street" and "corporate greed".
(2) "Taking it to the streets" only works in totalitarian states (because that's all they have.) In a democracy, you take it to the ballot box. That's what happened last November, and it's what's gonna happen next November -- with similar results.
Whether Obama`s policies are a complete failure or not, the fact is we BAILED Wall Street out. So out of gratitude, they can only raise rates and fees? At least a few are simply for themselves, by themselves and TO themselves, which I guess is perfectly legal. To what degree I can, I personally will not vote for ANY candidate who EVER "suggests" another "bailout". If I bankrupt myself, the FED IS NOT going to "bail me out". Same thing; run your "too big to be allowed to fail" back into arrears, well it`s "Syanara !!' But not to worry, they`ll jump from their penthouse windows with their "golden cargo parachutes' LOADED with their MULTI- MILLION $$$$$$ "performance bonuses' that they "earned"...as Wall Street collapses again. Same old story...
I don't understand the mind set where " we the people" think the government or I owe them anything. So, put your big girl panties on, get out there and find you a job, live within your means. Yes capitalism promotes greed, don't panic, they have their reward on earth; this system is far better than your socialist utopia.
The occupiers are covering an array of items on their want list. I can see their point to a point. If one steps back and looks at them compared to the Tea Party, there are certain things both sides would like to change. However, the Tea Party blames the Government, spending, Lobbyists, entitlements, etc. The occupiers blame the Banks and Wall street. I see a combination of both, mainly with the deals that Corporations make with the Government and the Laws that are made that make things worse.
That said, I noticed in the video that the guy blamed everything on Republicans claiming they were filibustering everything the President is trying to do to "fix" things. He failed to mention the two years the Democrats had full control and just made things worse. The entire problem began under Bush and was brought to new heights with the Hope and Change guy. Mr Turner is correct in his feelings on the bailouts. They never should have happened. Every corporation and company that had a problem should have gone through the normal procedure. Bailing them out taught them nothing more than to revamp themselves in order to protect their capitol.
Most of the occupiers have no clue to what happened that changed things and openly blame "Corporate Greed" which of course there is no such thing. If you take the ridiculous items out of the occupiers agenda, there are things that make sense. Those things are closely related to what the Tea Party is complaining about. So, to a point, both have valid concerns. If both could agree and stop the hate, then their weapon of choice should be their Vote.
I do have a problem with those who are on the Government dole protesting though. They shouldn't even be allowed to vote in National Elections. Voting is NOT A RIGHT. Too many have become dependent on Government and that is why occupiers around the world are protesting. Their Governments are not capable of financially keeping up with their promises to their people, which is coming to the US soon.
Myself, I was laid off after 9/11 from a very good job building private Jets. With no one hiring at the time that would compensate me enough to be able to sustain my family and bills, I placed the house up for sale, moved back to an area I was familiar with and took what I could get work wise being self employed. I don't make a killing, no 401k, no insurance, nothing other than my own ability to drum up work and go take care of it.
No one owes me anything, the taxpayer is not responsible for my Children, health, home bills or mortgage, rent, car, phone, etc. No one is responsible for my life other than myself. I loathe people who live off the Government who are fully capable of working, then whine and complain about everything all the while with their hands stuck out. These people in my book are worthless.
kind of the way i think too if you cant feed them dont breed them
The whole premise of this video is misleading. Per the video the ‘Republican Santa Claus’ is tax cuts which it argues is the reason for the financial difficulties and the reason BHO has been having trouble getting anything passed in Congress. One cannot escape the fact that Federal revenues have declined in the last three years, from around 18% of GDP to around 15% a 3% decrease. But the more obvious issue is that federal spending has gone from around 18% of GDP in 2000 to around 24%, a 6% increase. THE ONLY period in the last 30 years that this was NOT the case was ’97-’00. Note that this includes administrations AND Congresses of BOTH parties. Even if we had not cut taxes and revenue stayed at 18% we would still have the deficits/debt as the SPENDING (as a %age of GDP) increased, again mostly over the last 30 years. This is not that hard to understand.
Replying to the one that replied to me ....
Thank you deathb4disco for watching the entire video that must have been hard for you. You're a good man. However it sounds like maybe we watched two different videos. LOL Like I said I don't ever expect all the members here to agree on much of anything. "In the eyes of the beholder" However, unless everyone on this board is super rich I really don't understand why they would support/defend policies and agendas that are geared to work against their best interests.
In a democracy you take it to the ballot box?? That's hasn't worked too well has it? When the White House is owned by the Corporations the ballot box has very little power. And we are not a Democracy we're a Republic. There IS a difference! We are guaranteed the right to assemble and protest. Thank you God!
Yeah, the Republicans want to focus on the debt but the real problem is JOBS! And the reason we are in the crapper right now IS due to corporate greed. People did the right thing, saved their money, build up IRAs and 401K for their retirement and then saw most of it disappear right before their eyes through no fault of their own. And you blame them for being mad as hell??
Doh
Lowellhturner, you said it well!
http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/3715/bailout.jpg
And then the Republicans want to kill Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, unemployment, public education .... IN ADDITION to dismantling every government agency known to man. Other than the destruction they promote this will also unemploy thousands and thousands of people. Are they prepared to feed and house them? None of those actions will hurt the super rich in the least bit. Matter of fact the super rich would get a tax cut. Take from the poor and give to the rich?
Your comment "really don`t understand why anyone would support/ defend policies and agendas that are geared to work against their best interests" says alot. However, if one`s PRECEIVED "best interest" laid outside the "status quo" and COULD be implimented to their GREATER PERSONAL GAIN, over the lesser "collective good" AND was barely LEGAL and you simply was willing to simply tear financial flesh off the stock market and Gov`t and society like a starved velociraptor (but ONLY for your OWN personal GOOD ) which is "Better"? The PROBLEM is this; as soon as others of this kind see him enjoying a seemingly endless financial bloody flesh feast, then they TOO get an appatite and start in. If ONLY this financial soulless individual could CONVINCE them that as a financial TERROR HIS NEED is SO MUCH GREATER THAN THEIRS and that THEY should act in the "interest of the greater collective good"...especially for HIS "GOOD". Try and with a STRAIGHT face TELL ME (and us) that that`s just NOT exactly all too human nature. "3; eh, I mean 8 for me, 1 for you. 27 for me, 1 for you . 389 for me, none for you..." ARGUE "Wall Strret" ISN`T like that"...In the end it`s EXACTLY what this is ALL about ! I have never willingly invested 1 misereable cent in Wall Street and NEVER WILL; too many WALL STREETERS are either incompetent ("Oh I know it`s YOUR life`s savings, but it`s just my job-OOPS!") OR (barely) legal THIEVES. How many rotten apples does it take to ruin a bushel?
Top 1% are getting even richer

Hands Clapping
You have no idea. Fortunately, I watch Chris Matthews froth at the mouth about the Republicans every night, so I'm used to that sort of thing.
Such as?
I'm not rich (much less super rich), but I wouldn't vote for the Dems if you held a gun to my head and suspended my mother over a pit filled with pirahnas.
The Obama White House is owned by the unions. Former SEIU head Andy Stern practically had an office there. Trumpka (AFL-CIO) said he spoke to the White House every day.
I know, but I didn't think it was necessary to actually type that.
Unemployment is still high because Obama's policies are a disaster. He promised his first stimulus (the one that "only" cost $787 billion) would keep unemployment to 8%. Oops. Then, he ignored the economy for a year and a half while he rammed through a health care bill that nobody wanted and we can't afford. Now, he wants to blow another $400 billion of other people's money. The only problem is he can't get all the Senate Dems to vote for it. Rofl Thank you Senators Tester, Lieberman and Nelson!
That's right. It was the fault of clueless politicians like Barney Frank and Christopher Dodd who can't get enough of the government meddling in the free market. They actually named the financial reform bill after those two clowns. Naming a financial reform bill after Dodd and Frank is like naming a hospital after Jack Kervorkian.
Do you honestly believe the hand full of people in this world that hold the money, and make policy throughout the world, invest that money, and some little pion man child and his clones...OWS hippies.... say pay your fair share, yeah right that is going to happen.
Has you mentioned earlier...I'm rich, I live in the USA.
You're right. This is just not fair:
Who are the 1 percent?
By Tami Luhby @CNNMoney October 20, 2011: 10:40 AM ET
Well, there were just under 1.4 million households that qualified for entry. They earned nearly 17% of the nation's income and paid roughly 37% of its income tax.
Occupy Wall Street: Who is the top 1% for income? - Oct. 20, 2011
Well I blame the current ineptitude of our government on the 2-party system. We're forced to either join the democrats and be a liberal or join the republicans and be a conservative, and if we don't our voice is never heard. The 2-party system has polarized our nation to the point that NOTHING good comes out of Washington anymore. All they do is bicker and point fingers and nothing gets done to solve our contry's mounting problems. When the country as a whole screams out for help, then the politicians rush through rediculous stop-gap solutions and push us further toward the brink of collapse.
Like them or not, at least the libertarian OWS movement and uber-conservative Tea Party movement are bringing new ideas and philosophies to a stagnating political arena. It won't be under Obama or because of Obama, but CHANGE is coming. I only pray it is for the betterment of society...
One more note on the OWS guys...I'll be surprised if their encampments can survive through next year's music festivals. The call of open pot smoking and jam bands will likely put a huge toll on their numbers... ;)
I barely made it thru the clip. A real maggot gagging story told by another maggot. Must be the Chris Matthews influence. I get a kick out of Matthews the zonkie.
Occupiers got ran out of their roost in Oakland. They vow to return. Cops gonna throw down on this motley crowd of zonkies.
First, the Republican HOUSE has passed 15 bills since the first of the year that would help (they say) improve the job problem. These have yet to be scheduled for vote by the Senate which as I’m sure you’re aware is held by the Democrats. Why is this?
Second, why hold the corporate greed solely responsible? Do you not hold those who borrowed more than they could afford? Was this ‘people doing the right thing’? While I know several were tempted by predatory mortgage writers MANY were not. Also consider the Government’s connection with this by pressing subprime mortgage writing by guaranteeing via Fannie/Freddie.
Thirdly, those who had IRA’s, 401K’s etal did not see ‘most of it disappear’ UNLESS they cashed them out at the bottom of the market. These investments will re-gain their value over time. 'No fault of their own', consider that if you WERE WILLINGLY investing in products that have RISK, which most do, THERE IS A POSSIBILITY OF A LOSS. The bailouts were WRONG but remember BHO was part of the Senate that voted for them as were a WIDE variety of Democrats (the party of which was the majority in BOTH houses at the time).
Well we COULD try it the OTHER WAY and REMOVE ALL Wall Street and Gov`t regulations. Open it up like the "wild West' where you can DO ANYTHING you`d like: dump toxic waste into the local river? SURE! Operate the biggest PONZI scheme ever seen? OF COURSE! Make your employees PAY to work? WHY NOT? Charge $36 a gallon for gas? It`ll be VERY "Profitable PLUS..." Sell the neighborhood kids AK 47s? As many as you can unload! PROFITS, PROFITS! PROFITS ! What a "GRAND" world it would be...
Dickieboy, again, my apologies. Simply can`t understand when any less than very right wing to ultra-right wing views are expressed the opinion seems to be "There`s a commie behind and under EVERY rock !" For GAWD`s sake, except for North Korea and Cuba, there AREN`T any REAL LIFE Stalinist "commie pinko fags' LEFT anymore. Ronald Reagan and the West WON that 1, and am proud to say we did it with a free market (capitalist) system. Seems so many persons say "OH! We CAN`T AFFORD a nat`l health system." "Oh, my company is drowning in Gov`t regulations and I`ll have to go to India or El Salvador." "Oh, we CAN`T DO anything about Wall Street because we NEED them so much' "Oh! We can`t just agree on ANYTHING that will ACTUALLY BETTER the lives of those who ELECTED us to Washington (but we CAN take campaign contributions from ANY and EVERYONE and will probabily sell our vote to the HIGHEST bidder.) Dickieboy, what`s your view on how to "FIX" this mess LONG TERM? Personally, would start with making "lobbying " and corperate campaign contributions ILLEGAL, and reinforce the Wall Street regulations with DRACONIAN "penalties ie MANDATORY PRISON SENTENCES. And throw in the long put off "line item VETO" for good measure.
LT, don't forget to make Union donations illegal too.
LT,
Where do you want me to start? Your rant included the subjects:
- Communism
- Capitalism
- Healthcare
- Government regulations
- Job outsourcing
- Wall Street value
- Campaign contributions
- Lobbying
- Corporate campaign contributions
- Wall Street regulations
Just not true. Our universities are full of 'em. And there are plenty of them at OWS.

Yep the two sides here really stand out.
One side with their delusional egalitarian utopian visions looks around and sees great wealth discrepancies they perceive as unfair. Their think their looney egalitarian utopia could be established if only the omniscient wizards of smart were in control in order to redistribute wealth according to their preconceived ideas as to just how much each should have. Their grand schemes demands and requires coercion against others for implementation.
The other side looks around realizing they must get off their duffs to achieve their visions of taking care of themselves and families for a better life realizing it is only possible from their own efforts and it won't be given to them by others.
What I really find astounding is the haughty condescension from the left towards those striving to take care of themselves to the best of their abilities. The leftists proclaims to know better than you how your money should be spent and they also know better than you what your best interests are since they deem you intellectually inferior for not sharing their grandiose idiotic ideas !!!! As documented by the following.
Yep it is all vary apparent Pox and Reaper and any other productive individual is that you all are just seen a means for others ends, that you don't hold for yourselves. The left needs you the productive for their ends where as they are nothing but leeches on your productive efforts.
Boortz is the MAN!
I hope the "New World Order' financial types (read that as the Fabians, Illuminati, Rothchilds, Nazis, "communists', whom ever, ect) don`t see the conservative right the exact same way...dependant for their "wealth' on a financial system that basically "stacks the deck" against them too, ultimately...we are SERIOUSLY in very deep "do- do"...
As long as the brain deads support Obozo types, we will stay neck high in the do do.
