Haven't been tying very long and I don't have any powder paints yet so I've just been tinkering with these unpainted heads so far. Here's one that's been working pretty good for me. Don't have a name for it but I think a black head would really set it off. It's got plenty of action and catches fish.

I've found that painted heads dont make alot of difference most of the time. If youve only been tying a short time I cant wait to see your jigs a year from now.Thumbs Up That jig looks killer to me.
That would look good with a watermelon head with some baitfish over that also. Nice work. I use a lot of unpainted heads with good results.

You are at the right place and any questions just ask and someone or many will help. It's a good community here.
I tell you the Black would look good as would the other suggestions including nothing, but sometimes a color on the head can make a difference. It may not be ofter, but for me one time out is enough to paint mine. If someone ask me for unpainted heads I still clear coat them to keep them from oxidizing.
One other color head that would look great is Chartreuse.

Welcome to the mad, mad, mad, mad!! world of tying!Thumbs Up Your jig looks good and it is great to hear you have been catching fish on your own jigs, Hands Clapping. If you want to try some color on your heads go to any Dollar Store and pick up a few colors of nail polish. Most colors will cover in one coat and you also need clear Sally Henson clear. It will be used on about everything form heads to tying off thread. I keep lots of both around, and yes sometimes my fingers and toes like very nice LOL..
Thanks guys. It's been an interesting adventure. I got started tying by accident. I bought a little jig one time a few years back that was nothing more than some Krystal Flash tied to a jig head. I used to tip that jig with minnows and I'd flat burn them up casting toward the bank with a slow retrieve. I lost those jigs years ago and after getting serious about crappie fishing over the last year or so I decided I could probably save a little money if I'd just tie my own. (I think I was wrong). :)
I've since started tying a little bit of everything just messing around from time to time and I feel like I've got a few good jigs that work just as well as anything I've ever bought. I do have one question though. All I have for cement is this bottle that came with the supplies I ordered from crazyangler. It's a waterbased head cement. Is it ok to just use the clear fingernail polish as a cement? I have a Dollar Store not too far down the road.
For most of my tying I don't even use head cement. If you learn the 3 and 5 turn whip finish that should finish your jigs right off.
Sorry I forgot to welcome you, but welcome from Middle Tennessee. A lot of us use Sally Hanson's hard as nails. I thin mine with some lacquer thinner and it soaks in nicely. also use it as it comes from the bottle for the thread necks. I have always had a tendency to overbuild so I use cement on most everything.
Yes the SH hard as nails you can buy for a couple of dollars and it doesn't yellow. Great on threads.
Just wanted to tell y'all what happened this AM with my Sally. In the past I have used lacquer thinner to thin the sally in the needle tip bottle I use to lock everything in place with good success. When I tried to duplicate this today it congealed and I wound up throwing it out and barely salvaging the bottle. I guess that the additives don't like my thinner in the new stuff or the thinner isn't what the label says. Anyway, please disregard my previous post on what to thin with, clearly it doesn't work. Any input on this would be appreciated.
I have had the same problem with it congealing in the needle top bottles. I use it with the brush, just run the brush down beside the head to the thread. I had trouble with head cement congealing too. I only use water based sealers in the needle bottles now.
That is one thing you seem to have already figured out is that was misguided as this addiction is or can be so expensive and you still have not seen the worst of it I assure you of that. Some manage to stay low cost I guess as long as they are the type tier that is not pulled in to news exciting materials. YOu really wouldn't believe how much I spend each year on materials, but it's way more than needed. I have to much fly tying stuff it's crazy since I don't sell all that many flies. I do a little, but I have to much dry fly quality hackle it takes several large storage containers and they are overflowing into new places, LOL!Quote:
