Fished Ky River after work today and caught a few nice crappie. Bite was slow but should pick up soon. All were caught pitching curl-tail jigs in brush 10- 15 fow. good mess man! I been itching to do some river crappie fishing here recently, might head to the ohio or licking and see if i can get into any in next week or two. Heard the KY River been giving up nice messes of big crappie this year, thats good news. You in creeks or main riv catchin em.
We caught them on the main river. All the rivers will get better soon.
I can't wait to get to the river as soon as my new boat gets in. I fish the river a lot, what pool do you fish.

When are you going back to the Kentucky River? Where about was you and did you have a boat? I been trying to learn more and been trying the creek by Halls on the river and at the beach at Boonsboro state park (the dam) and not a bite. Maybe we could go and do lunch. Hey Fred I do fish the river some. It can be very tough at times. The crappie will move up in the creeks the first of April. Lower Howard's creek at halls will have fish in it around April. If you are going to fish off the bank I would go to the mouth of Tate's creek at Valley view. It has a bridge over it with easy access to the water.

Valley view ferry crosses the river out of Madison co. Tate's creek runs into the river just above the ferry. Look on google maps.
Is that water temp right? 68 seems pretty high.

Fred ... Valley View is at the end of Tates Creek Road, that runs South out of Lexington. You can get there from Hall's, but it's actually on the opposite end of that pool of the river. Valley View is just upriver from the lock/dam that ends that pool... and Boonesboro Beach/Halls is just below the lock/dam that starts that pool.Quote:

FYI --- Most people call the creek "Tates Creek" ... but, I think its actual name is Tattlers Branch. Tattler Branch Rd goes across it, which is the bridge that "kygofish" is referring to. It's on the opposite side of the river from Valley View.
About 1/3 of the way from Boonesboro Beach to Valley View, you'll pass under the old state highway bridge (known as Clays Ferry Bridge) & then under the I-75 bridge. That's where I've done most of my Crappie fishing on the river ... around those bridge pilings.

I think I know where your talking about. I fished there at the dam and the beach and I saw the bridge.... Thats about as far as I can go because I fish from the banks and have no boat.... I have fished there at Halls in the creeks 3 times with jigs and minnows last month and didn't even get a nibble, BUT..... they say there are nice crappie in there.
Fred ... I don't know about now, but the land on the Lexington side of the river at Valley View used to be private. Not sure about the creek/bridge area on the other side, as I've never fished over there.
Yes, there are nice Crappie in the Ky River ... getting to them from the bank is even more tricky/problematic than from a boat, and even that's not all that easy, sometimes Rofl
You're probably going to have to just take your chances, while keeping up with any reports, and try & time your trips when the Crappie move up into the creeks ... like when spawning, or when the river is muddy but the creeks have cleared. :dono

Thanks for all your help sir,Im looking forward to catching some slabs. Some one told me that I should try a place called Red River over in Trap area right pass Trap Grocery Store. Said it runs into the KY River.... I may go get me some red worms and a few minnows tomorrow and try it.

It may still be a little early for them to be in the creeks. These cold nights & rains are probably keeping the water temps down. You might be better served to try them after a few days of warmer weather, or later in the day (after the Sun has had a chance to warm things up, if the creek is open to the Sunlight). Remember, water temps not only dictate where they'll be or how deep, but also what mood they'll be in. The days are coming that will bring them within your reach, it just may not be right now ... considering your limited range.Quote:

Good luck to you all, and wheres that at? you gonna be in a boat? I would think with the few warmer nights and it being in the 60's the crappie might come up a little.
West Sandy is off of the Big Sandy River, lower end of KY lake, near Springville, TN

Sounds good, I hope to find them in the Kentucky River MAYBE Thursday when we're in the 60's.
The weather has changed our plans. With a SW wind at 18-20 MPH, the West Sandy Creek area will be rolling whitecaps.
We'll try the trip another time.
when will crappie spawn in KY River? Im seeing the people who are catching crappie are fishing deep out in a boat. Ill have to wait cause I fish the bank...
hey cp or anyone else out there know who owns the land on KY River under the bridge next to the beach? I drove by there and was wanting to fish under it next to the pillings but gate was closed and said private property.
