If money was no object what would you have on your boat?
Lowrance LDS 8 on the front and a LDS 10 on the dash. Both hooked up to a LSS1 Structure Scan. Lowrance's maps are better.
Just what Holic said!
Yikess, what do you mean by interchangeable?
A 1198 and HDS10 in the front set side by side... And another 1198 and HDS10 in the back set side by side... I think I could handle that...
DoubleG
By interchangeable, he means having them on comparable ram mounts and able to swap the 8 to the back an 10 to front.
Being a serious crankbaiter, I'd agree with a 10 but if money truly is no object I'd be tempted to have 2 8s up front and a 10 at the dash. Fo spider rigging u could split both at 2 screens and have no troulble reading them all.
Wannabe...
Just not comfortable lowrance, is it that much bettet

Better picture on the Lowrance no doubt. Eye catching to the fisherman but I put my money on HB for sonar and Side Imaging. So money no object 1198 no doubt on the console and 998 on the front.. I might even be tempted to 1198 the front as well.. I have it on my mind right now to do that.
Considering a 1198 to go with my 998.

Amen, Rip!
Mine would be an HDS 10 up front connected to LSS-1 box with LSS-1 ducer on Terrova w/universal sonar for spider rigging, screen split 3 ways to show chart, sonar and down image. HDS 8 at console for navagation and SI and HDS 8 at right back corner for crankin, both 8's connected to their own LSS-1 box with ducers on back.
I like the two LSS-1's, one on TM, other on Transom, with a switch box to eliminate interference between the two, with 3 HDS10's. Front, Dash, and Rear, all Networked to both LSS-1's.
Got an HDS 10 Dash, and HDS 7 Bow, with the LSS-1 networked now. I need to upgrade some.
Torch I have run both humminbird and Lowrance, and for the best picture of underwater structure Lowrance is great. I have a 5.7.and 8. the 7 and 8 are on ram mounts, movable if necessary,
I run a HDS 8 on console and HDS 5 on bow, along with my old LCX28c.I would definitely change the 5 to another 8.I use the lcx for the map and 2d. It has hard drive and transducer on trolling motor. Use the 5 for side scan and downscan. It needs to be bigger. The 8 could be swapped for 10, and I wouldn change anything else. ( at least until next trip). All ethernet through the LSS1. I have seen black and white movie camera's not as good pic as the 8.
I run two HDS-8's on my glass boat, and HB on my tin boat. Like the picture and features on the LW, but not sure about durability. The HB has been bulletproof, and more user friendly.
Yes, lowrance really is that much better. Not as easy to use, true, but still better.
Aside from that, sunlight readability is head, shoulders and belly button above hb. Even with polarized glasses on. Not sure if screen is any better on 998 or 1198, but my 997 flat out stunk in that regard...still a good unit though.

My 1198 is alot brighter than my 898 was.. due to the different back light. I too believe Lowrance SI has better image and much better DI image due to the fact they have extra crystal... but for me it was just too many darn wires, boxes, cables, etc... And the Lowrance was about $500 more.. Also the lowrance wire would not fit down the shaft of my terrova...
I sure wish somebody would post some of these HDS Structure Scan images.... Seeing is believing right.. I felt sure Wannabe would have hooked us up by now... Man oh man... Tighten up Wannabe!

I've been wanting to see in person just how much better it is
Get Sat to install a dish then i would get 19in flat screen 12v TV. Then icould watch all the huntin and fishin shows while im fishin.
If you buy multiple units the Lowrance is less money. You won't have to pay for the SI/DI twice with the HDS, cause it isn't built in like the HB's are, and you also don't have to buy an Inter Link to Network the HDS's like you do with two HB's. The LSS-1 runs up to three units, and it IS the Network Link as well. The wiring is the same on both brands when you figure the Inter Link wiring.
If you only buy one unit, the HB's are less because you dont have to buy the LSS-1.
No need for interlink with HB.. They use ethernet cable.. Just get the cable and go to it..
Each HB unit comes with SI transducer.. No need for extra $500 LSS-1... There are WAY MORE WIRES with Lowrance since is has separate 2D and SI transducer. They both have a wire. Then you wire that to LSS1 then from LSS1 to Unit.
Also Lowrance does not come with external GPS puck to put near your transducer. That is separate for about $150 - $200.
See below:
I disagree, especially when you figure running the cables for the two pucks, I can figure the distance from the GPS to the Transducer, and don't need the xtra puck on the HDS's. Minus 200. I wasn't aware of the need for a Nema cable either, but you do need an extra Ethernet cable for the second unit to network them. I also use an Interlink to network two HB's. Plus 150 installed. I also wasn't aware you could Network with just an Ethernet cable, and enter the same waypoints, and share the same info on both units at once. I was told by a tech at HB you needed the Interlink to do it, and have installed several of them. If you're right, and I certainly hope you are, Minus 150. I'm calling HB tomorrow and ask WHY I needed the Inlerlink if you're right!!!!
Anyway, both are nice units, and it's really personal preference. I like the HDS units better, but I do sell lots of both. I also was in the car audio business for 30+ years, and I guess a few wires didn't matter anyway.
So, we have a transducer cable, and three power wires for a total of 4 on the LSS-1, and we have two power wires on the Interlink, and two Puck cables for a total of 4. Sounds like an even trade off, unless I missed one here or there.
IF you use the Interlink, and using YOUR figures, the price difference is relatively negligible. Hey, if you have the money for these units, what's a hundred or two either way!!!!!!!
The puck is to get it up to par with the HB 4x speed pluck. The HDS pluck is 1x speed. The HDS surpassed the HB if you get the 5x LGC pluck. Being able to put the pluck as close to the transducer as possible is a huge advantage in my option if you want to be right on top of the structure.
Yes, all you need is the ethernet cable now. It was made available in a software update last year. That will save you some money.
As for as the wires go... I didn't want two transducer wires going to the bow of my boat.. then routed one to LSS-1.. then having to find a place to put the dang LSS-1.. then wires from there to unit. Also if I wanted to upgrade to LGC pluck I needed nema wires and wire it up... With HB you got one wire to tranducer, two power, and one to GPS. It takes away having to wire to the Lss-1 and one less wire to the bow. Not much difference... especially if you have the room to mount it. I really didn't have room.
If you compare apples to apples... The HDS is always about $400 more. But like you said... What is $400 more.. ha..
I wish I could have both! Both have there advantages. The maps of the Lowrance seem to excel but I got my fingers crossed for some Lake Master maps of the southern states soon... I can dream right??? ha
DoubleG
OK, you win. LMAO!! I still like the HDS's better. Maybe Lowrance will update their internal GPS receiver to whatever X. ;-)
I do mount the LSS-1 transducer to the transom, I network it to the bow unit, and just use the US2 in my Terrova up front for Sonar. I usually try to mount the LSS-1 under the dash somewhere. Works OK for me!! I run a 10 on the dash, and a 7 up front on my boat now.

LOL... I would love to have a HDS 10 to compare to the 1198... You got any screen shots from your HDS10?
If i had a glass boat I would have probably went with the HDS10. Seems like there is more room in a glass boat for stuff. Maybe my next boat!
I am fixing to start a new topic of lowrance vs HB screenshots.. I hope some HDS guys will post of some images. I have a hard time finding good real world HDS images. There are hundred of HB images online but very few HDS images from actual users. I want to see user pictures and not sponsors or advertisement pics..
DoubleG
Got mine in an Xpress H-18PFC.
I've never taken any screen shots, but I'll get some in the near future and post em.
BRM
Gotcha... That is the same size as my 1860 G3 I believe...
Yeah I want to see them. I have seen some awesome shots online but not many posted by folks. I am fascinated by them... I watch my 1198 more than I fish. .ha.

Search some of Talon or Lakeshelbyvilleguide post on the Illinois board. They have posted quite a bit of HDS stuff on there.
Awesome... Thanks for the info.. I want to check those out. I will look them up.. Thanks.
Don't be listening to 2Gobble Torch, the boy can't even post a peacture right and he'll get you all confused. Take 2 HDS10s and call me in the morning.
