A'ite, here we go - Nominations for FJ Tournament Director
I would say, Grand Poobah Nominations, but we all know there ain't nobody Grand enough, nor Poobah enough for the job, so we're lowering the bar and just looking for a tournament director.
Here's the deal....we've never actually had a real board of directors and a seperate committe. The committee, which was originally picked by me is the board for all practical purposes. Therefore, me and the committee are pretty much running this thing from the seat of our pants. So, what I'm going to do here is take your nominations for my replacement. You are welcome to nominate anybody you want. I'll compose a list and put up a poll to run...let's say 3 days. From that list, the top 3 vote getters will be the nominees. We'll do another poll of those 3 to run another 3 days and the top vote getter is the new tournament director.
Ok, rules are, nominate anybody ya want, but before I set the first poll up, I'm going to PM those guys and confirm that they accept the nomination. The glory is great and the pay is fabulous, but you gotta want to do this, not be forced to.
Now, why am I resigning....well, two reasons:
1) I think it's better for the group to have fresh blood and new ideas from time to time. If I were to stay, I'd keep doing what I'm doing the same way I'm doing it. Maybe somebody else has a better way, maybe not...we'll see.
2) It takes a good bit of effort to get it done and I'd like to be able to step back and enjoy it a little more and visit with folks more before and after the FJs.
I'm gonna keep fishing every one I can get to and I'm gonna start winning most of them and it wouldn't look right for the tournament director to win that often....ya'll might start thinking I'm rigging them.
Anyhow, the duties of the tournament director are currently as follows, for whoever ends up in the slot:
1) Organize the tournament which consists mostly of getting a consensus and directing information on C.C and phone.
2) Head up the tweaking of the rules with suggestions and getting agreement from the committee.
3) Serve as the treasurer for the tournament monies.
4) Serve as record keeper of the results, qualifications etc.
5) Serve as tournament announcer....we definitely need to do better at that, cause I flat out stink at it.
In addition, I feel that the T director and the FJs are best served if they have a thick skin, an easy going attitude, a willingness to serve, devastating good looks and movie star hair. We're probably going to be out of luck on the last two.
Once elected it's up to the T director and committee to run things as they see fit. My role will only be that of a participant, but I'm more than willing, just like pretty much everybody, to help in any and every way. That said, I propose and hope the new T director along with the committee to make some structural changes, namely to elect a 3 to 5 person board of directors, who in turn appoints the committee to serve either 1 or 2 year terms. I would also suggest that for the first election of the board, one be selected for 1 year, 1 for 2 year and 1 for 3 years (or a mix like that if there's 5). The reason for this is that some of the biggest stuggles I've had is coming to a consensus on the rules and rulings and the public way I've gone about it has caused some bumps and bruises along the way. In having a formal board, the "how the sausage gets made" aspect of rules changes and rulings will be taken to a private setting and hopefully avoid any future blow ups. I envision the board voting on and adopting the structure and rules and the committee running the show on game day...much like any other club or group we've all been a part of. With a rolling board term, every year we would elect one or more new members to the board and every year or two, the board would appoint a new committee. If adopted, I think that's the single best way to ensure that the FJs will continue in the future and grow.
That's what I propose, but as of Saturday, all I can do is suggest...my replacement and the committee are free to do as they see fit.
A'ite, let the nominations begin.
Wannabe...
