I thought my 998 was big until I saw one next to a 1198.

The folks at HB told me that the only difference between the sizes from 898 to 1198 was the screen size.....thats the only difference, your paying all that extra money just for screen size. That big one would be nice though.
Get Canepole to wire you up a 42" flat screen.
Gonna be a 1197 on my boat next time ya see me, Maj.
Dang! Gonna need a high chair to see over the graph on the console.:eek::)
You ought to save the extra $1000 and get the 1198. 2 completely different units.
I been looking at one to the left of those a couple units . Can't play with the big boys yet. So i go by and look and touch it a couple times a week .
GEEZZZZ man, I didn't realize it was that much bigger. When I'm running a split screen with a lake map and SI, I can bearly see the SI and I have it on a 60/40 split with the SI being the 60
Yeah, once you use a bigger screen a smaller one is a pain. Mounted a smaller one one the front of my boat yesterday in case we need to slow troll this weekend and IT'S SMALL compared to my other one.
I upgraded from my 898 to the 1198 this summer. The 1198 is super nice. The best thing about it, is that you can have SI, 2D, Maps on the same screen and they are all big enough to see. Also, if you are looking for structure or fish strictly... you can put the SI on the whole screen you can see alot more and scan a much wider area without everything getting too small. The 1198 also has a much faster processor so when you load the maps or switch from screen to screen there is basically no drag time. I use to have some drag time on start up with the 898. It was no big deal but you can tell the difference. Btw - the 1198 is huge... When I sold my 898 I just sold the head unit... So I kept my tranducer and GPS. I then mounted the transducer and gps of the 1198 to the front of the boat so I have duel mounting locations to fit what ever style of fishing for that day.

Love my 1198si with the readouts on bottom of the screen don't take up space on the side, LOL
your right Double G
might as well get sat to install a satellite on your boat, and you can have a TV!
One unit is cheaper than two, but if you run dual HBs it will cost more. You pay twice for the SI, DI on the HBs, plus an Interlink Box to network. With the HDSs you only buy the LSS-1(Structure Scan Unit) once and it is the Ethernet link. Will need an ethernet cable to network either way. With a second cable you can network a third unit with the HDSs all on one LSS-1.
The HDS units are super fine.. In fact, they beat the pants off Humminbird in the Down Image quality since they have a dedicated crystal for the DI. Also there SI is really good.... maybe an edge over HB but hard to tell since people like Wannabe won't post any side image pictures...... LOL.... but I disagree on them being cheaper than HB. You have to compare all that they come with. I looked real hard at getting a HDS but decided to stick with HB. Here is a break down.
HDS 8 w/83 8"- $1525 (comes with built in GPS with 1x speed)
HDS 5 w/83 5"- $633
Structure scan module with SI ducer - $550
Nema 2000 cables - $50
LGC 4000 GPS puck (5x speed) - $200
Total = $2958
HB 798 83/200 + SI 5"- $845
HB 998 83/200 + SI 8" - $1634 (comes with 50 channel GPS 4x speed)
Ethernet cable - $45
Total = $2524
If you take out the $200 LGC pluck, the HDS is still more expensive.... Having to buy the structure scan LSS1 box separately is where it gets you... But you definitely don't pay twice for the SI and DI on the humminbirds... They are both very comparable in price.
DoubleG
I'll tell anyone this....a big, honkin' giant screen fancy smancy fish finding doo-hickey don't mean you gonna catch more fish.......but it sure does take sexy to a whole new level.
Wannabe...
If you ever plan on running HDS SI on trolling motor separate from transom better figure on two LSS-1's at $550.00 each.
