Spider proofing your boat

I have kept a pile of stakes for a few years and tied them up 25 to a bundle. I've noticed they are very bad about attracting spiders, especially brown recluses. Yesterday I moved them from the barn and loaded them in the back of my truck.

I knew there was a good chance there were brown recluses hidden in the bundles so I dropped them on concrete and rolled them around several times each to try to kill any that might be in them. I killed several that tried to run off and noticed several more that had been killed as well. I did the same thing when unloading them at the lake. I then loaded them in the boat (about 350 stakes in all). I finally got them out right at dark and had to drive back in the dark.

When unloading the boat and putting things away, I noticed a big one crawling across the front deck. I couldn't reach it and by the time I found a light, it had already disappeared in a seam. I looked for 30 minutes but never could find it.

Does anyone have any suggestions to spider proof your boat? My grandson is under 2 years old and loves nothing better than to sit behind the steering wheel and act like he is driving it. It worries me, he could be bitten. I have bought a product called Talstar which is supposed to great at killing them but I worry the cure could be worse than the problem. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions and have any of you used Talstar before and if so, how did it work for you?

I've had good luck with them before but it doesn't come close to getting them all like the Talstar. Then again, not nearly as hazardous to deal with either.

I spray my boat every few months with Ortho Home Defense Max and so far so good. I spray around the decks, compartments, bilge, etc... Of course if they are getting in the boat from the wood the only way to be 100% is to cut the rope/string and look at every piece of wood before re-bundling and placing in the boat...

I thought about that one too and I might try it but would rather wait until I know the boat is going to sitting still for a few weeks. I might really saturate it then and then let it air out. I would think that would do it.

I might go ahead and try the moth balls and the glue traps this weekend and wait awhile on the poison. I have pets and I worry about somehow they get a little of it. It may not happen but I've got to be sure. My labs favorite place to lay up is under the boat.

Wrap Your boat with a big tarp and light off a bug bomb in it. Let sit a few hours and will be bug free.CF

My wife uses Bounce Dryer sheets and puts them around things in the fall. Spiders and bugs don't like Bounce sheets.

How about Hedge apple/spider balls?? I know the ball are ready now as I just got a basket full. they work good in side

Luckily with my old POS I can wash the whole thing out pretty good. in the hard to get cracks I normally put a few shots of carb cleaner if its been setting awhile. I *HATE* spiders worse than anything. I'd rather know there was a huge timber rattler settings by my transom than a spider! I hate runnings limblines and having those long legged skinny devil spiders drop in the boat.
